Well that resolution didn't last long. A special offer on an author I'm reading came up. A trilogy of books for £0.99 each.

I don't regret the purchase. At least I am now only buying books that I really do want to read, not just ones that sound interesting.

I have had two periods of unemployment-forced austerity in my life. And I am honestly very grateful for both of them as they really helped me in the "need/want/must have now" department. Buying two massive (and not cheap as they came via my independent bookseller) hardcovers this week was a real pleasure for me. When I was a kid, buying a book was an event, and I actually really love that it has become that way again.

But, much in the same way, the library was a hard and fast weekly routine. And now I have a much better library to use than when I was a kid.

Libraries are wonderful things. The entire spectrum of literature available for free, even new releases. If they don't already have the book you want, they'll probably order it for a tiny fee. Unless it's some massive expensive art book.

Libraries are wonderful things but they often don't have a book that I want available when I want it. Mine carries very little science fiction or fantasy. Even less in Ebooks or audio.

If the printed book you want is not available at your library, it may be possible to obtain it from another library via interlibrary loan. It can take 3-4 weeks, and some libraries charge a small fee for the service; at others, it's free. If it's something you really want to read, however, it might be worth the $2 or $3 and the wait.

Yes, it is. I'm still wincing about September, when three of four purchases were a case of the sale creating the want. I can't keep patting my own shoulder about doing so much better last year and this year when I slip up like that.

(And what about the 13 of 22 books bought last year that are still unread, hmm? )

(Good lord, it gets worse still. I've already bought more books and spent more money this year than I did all of last year! I hadn't realized until I went looking now. Granted some of that was pushed by credit I felt compelled to use, but!)

Wow. Just, wow. And not in a good sense.

I have books from 2008 that I've bought and not read. I'm going to take a good look through them and remove ones I'm not going to read from my TBR before the start of next year.

Wow, you're doing really good! I have 225 books bought from Kobo. About 90% bought on sale. I rarely buy books at full price unless I'm reading right away. And that's not counting the books I've bought from Baen bundles that are sitting in calibre. Plus some freebies. I went and did a purge of all the freebies that I'll never read so there's a lot less in there. Yikes that's a lot of books.

And speaking of Baen, I was tempted buy the bundles again. Sure they're a good deal but then that's about 40 more books I won't get to any time soon. There's one in the bundles I might get but I'll just get it when it's released, so it's only one book.

I currently have unread bought books from (number bought in brackets)
2008: 76 (394)
2009: 48 (247)
2010: 21 (116)
2011: 32 (195)
2012: 20 (133)
2013: 68 (284)
2014: 112 (296)
2015: 165 (316)
2016: 126 (428) (but 183 were comics)
2017: 48 (134)
2018: 87 (170)

It seems I do read the vast majority of the books I buy. 'Only' 803 unread out of 2,713 bought over the past ten years or so.

My numbers are painful but between 200-300 are Whispersync titles, so are counted twice and there are 100+ short stories or novellas included. Still needs some work though. I listed all the books from the Baen bundles even though I only have interest in some. None of the Lightspeed or Nightmare magazines are included either.

Unread bought books (ebook, audiobook and magazine combined)
2010 6
2011 29
2012 232
2013 461
2014 266

My problem now is I’ve lost imterest in some of the books I bought years ago. I seem to be mainly reading mystery/suspense or romance. So I have all these sci fi books that I can’t get into anymore. Hum well then I should know not to buy them I guess.

Purplestar, sometimes you just need a break from a genre. Keep the ones you have for now and just don't buy anymore unless you pick it up again. Except for Jim Butcher, I don't buy paranormal any longer. I don't think I've bought a romance book since 2014 for the same reason.
