Seriously though, although I've never seen the TV shows (I don't watch much TV), I have found most of the Maigret books to be nicely paced police procedurals. Maybe a bit slow since you get lots of the details of what's going on, but that's kind of the definition of a police procedural.

Bias warning: I like police procedurals, and I tend to be favorably disposed towards mysteries set in France since I love most things French (other than some of the smellier French cheeses ).

This works out to pretty nice pricing for either collection if you need all of the titles. Per SYKM, the last title in the first collection, Old Bones, won the 1988 Edgar Award for Best Mystery. I'm actually surprised this series hasn't won/been nominated for more awards - I really enjoy it.
