What I am telling you is that iBooks deviates from the standard by modifying the ePub.

We were getting to a reasonably clear situation where everyone using ePub who wanted to add DRM was applying Adobe's ADEPT version, but over the last year it's got more confused with B&N and Apple applying their own variants to lock people into their own stores. The ePub format itself should work on any ePub device if you have the rights to the file, but as with any standard there are files that deviate from it in some areas, and the standard itself is evolving. The issues with conflicting DRM schemes vastly outweigh issues with deviations in the underlying ePub file. Graham |

When you put an ePub eBook into iTunes, iTunes adds a file to the ePub that is not part of the standard. iTunes does this for use with iBooks. the file is iTunesMetadata.plist. This file is not part of the ePub standard and it not used at all by ADE. It could be possible that Calibre doesn't understand this file and therefore isn't dealing well with it.

ePub and other ebook formats are much like HTML in the sense that they are "mark up languages" meaning that text is marked (formatted) by adding standardized tags. But like HTML, not everyone interprets and/or implements the mark up the same. There is also the DRM implementation which is discussed in other posts above. I am not sure I will change, I love my Kindle. I will definitely have to buy one, so we can make the skins for the K3. We just put K2 skins on sale:

I don't actually use the wireless that often, I am still trying to catch up on all the backlog of books I already have!

I am sure this has been asked and answered but will inquire anyway. I am ordering the K3 for my hubby and want to know if I can share some of my Amazon purchased books with him by download from my Amazon Kindle page. Thanks for your kind help.

You will be adding the new Kindle to your account, I assume. He can download anything.

I just saw a TV commercial for the new graphite Kindle for $139. Just caught a real quick glimpse of it, as I thought it was an older commercial and wasn't paying that much attention.

Just a heads up for anyone still thinking of ordering -- all three versions are currently listed as sold out. Amazon is showing a shipping date of Sept. 4 for orders placed now.
