Well you see very little of either in Southern Cookbooks. What we aren't our own country? We have everything from mountains to deserts to forests and beaches. Also a pretty good size canyon and an area for wine.

I would have to look at a map showing latitudes, or look it up, but I think that Florida may technically be the most southern state. We've got all of these little islands that are quite a few miles south of Key West, you know. Does anyone know definitively?

From reference.Com The southernmost state in the United States is Hawaii. Hawaii is roughly as far south as Cuba. If only the continental United States are being considered, the southernmost state is Florida.

Texas could have probably been its own country if it had wanted to. I think that Sam Houston & Davy Crockett & those guys wanted to join the U.S. It couldn't be a country now, of course, because Abraham Lincoln unilaterally decided that states can't withdraw from the Union, even if they joined voluntarily (no, I'm not an Abraham Lincoln fan).

I really can understand why Texas might not be included in Southern cookbooks. The food in the eastern part of the state definitely reflects Southern influence (how can it not, being smack dab next to Louisiana and Arkansas?), but it quickly becomes less and less Southern-like the further west in Texas that you go.

There must be widespread ignorance about what we call the "real Florida." The chefs and cooks who write the cookbooks probably don't travel anywhere in the interior of the state to know what exists here--they just know Palm Beach/Miami/Miami Beach and maybe Orlando. Maybe I can compile a Florida cookbook and make millions of $$$ . . . .

I will be your first customer. Although there are probably already a dozen Florida cookbooks.
Though if you check your history books, you will discover that Texas only rejoined the Union with the caveat that we could leave again if so desired.

I don't have any original recipes of my own, so I'd have to . . . uh . . . borrow them from other cookbooks.

I wasn't aware of that, but in my opinion that promise wouldn't be worth 2 cents if Texas really were to try to secede. Our federal government has lied plenty of times about things like that before. Shall I look up and list some of the treaties with the Indians that it made and then violated?

It's all a moot point, anyway. The political climate in Texas and/or the rest of the United States would have to change really, really radically in order for secession to be seriously considered.

Book Description
At last, addictive flavors, and a breakthrough method for making creamy, scoopable ice cream at home, from the proprietor of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, whose artisanal scooperies in Ohio are nationally acclaimed.

Now, with her debut cookbook, Jeni Britton Bauer is on a mission to help foodies create perfect ice creams, yogurts, and sorbets—ones that are every bit as perfect as hers—in their own kitchens. Frustrated by icy and crumbly homemade ice cream, Bauer invested in a $50 ice cream maker and proceeded to test and retest recipes until she devised a formula to make creamy, sturdy, lickable ice cream at home. Filled with irresistible color photographs, this delightful cookbook contains 100 of Jeni’s jaw-droppingly delicious signature recipes—from her Goat Cheese with Roasted Cherries to her Queen City Cayenne to her Bourbon with Toasted Buttered Pecans. Fans of easy-to-prepare desserts with star quality will scoop this book up.

How cool is that?

The Republic of Texas existed from March 2, 1836, to February 19, 1846. It was then admitted into the United States as the 28th state.

Note: that was 15 years before we left the Union.
The U.S. state of Texas declared its secession from the United States of America on February 2, 1861, and joined the Confederate States on March 2, 1861, after it replaced its governor, Sam Houston, when he refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.

Maybe I should have said, "Abraham Lincoln unilaterally decided that states can't withdraw from the Union, and get by with it, even if they joined voluntarily." ha

So, the federal government didn't honor, in the past, the caveat that Texas could exit the Union if it wanted to?

I don't know why my Texas history is so weak. Looks like elementary schools that I was in in Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky would have covered it. ha (actually, it seems like I learned about the history of none of those three states--I moved from one state to another before a school year that it was going to be in the curriculum, a time or two. By the time that I started elementary school in Kentucky, one of the earlier grades had already covered Kentucky history. My sister may have fared better; in fact, she may have hit it just right and got Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky history!).

The only way one learns a state history is by being in that state in junior high.

I think that they covered it much earlier than that in Kentucky. I started school there at the beginning of fourth grade. I cannot remember Kentucky history being taught at any time all the way through high school in the state.

No matter. I've managed to survive.
