UPDATE: The piece ends very abruptly at about 2:15. But, it does the same thing when I listen to it on Spotify, and Spotify shows it as a 2:15 long piece. I suspect that it continues to the next piece, which is not a part of Classical-music.com's free download. If that is not the answer, someone who is a whole lot smarter on this stuff (which is basically anyone. ha) will have to tell us what's going on. Thanks, G.

This week it's Nielsen Symphony No. 3 III. Alegretto un poco:
This week's free download is the Allegretto from Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 3, 'Sinfonia Espansiva'. It comes from a new recording by Sakari Oramo and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, winner of the 2016 BBC Music Magazine Orchestral Award.

'The music of Nielsen is so much in the DNA of the orchestra that it felt completely natural and organic,' said Oramo. 'Although they are not Danish, it is still an orchestra that has had Nielsen around from when he himself conducted here.'

I'm listening to the piece as I write. If I hear any sound quality issues, I'll do an update to this post. No news is good news.

I also got the truncated recording. The MP3's I can find run about 6:45, while the audio CD of this particular recording (http://www.amazon.com//dp/B00NJARNTY) shows that the piece should be 6:41.

I'm in favor of kicking back and waiting until tomorrow to see if anything changes, either because someone else has informed them at C-m.com or they have caught the error (if there is one) themselves. It is a week-long offer, after all, so there's plenty of time for troubleshooting. Besides, I'm a procrastinator. ha

Another week, another free classical music download from Alexander Street . . . .

This week it's "Mondnacht" from Liederkreis, op. 39 by Robert Shumann. The piece is performed by bass-baritone Martin Egel and pianist Marissa Borini.

For some reason, it was not necessary for me to log in in order to download the files. Perhaps your experience will be the same. Try clicking on the blue "Download" button on the webpage http://www.alexanderstreet.com/page/...-download-week. That should take you to this webpage: http://musicdownloads.alexanderstreet.com/promo/, where you can download the files.

There are 5 movements, I think. Each one is in WMA and MP3. Since that represents nearly 2 hours(!) of playing time, I have not been able to listen to them yet. So, I cannot vouch for the quality of the sound yet.

I just checked again. The download was of a bigger size, that was a hopeful sign. Then when I played it, it turned out to be 6:45 in length. I listened to the entirety of it--there appeared to be no sound issues, and it was a pleasant piece to listen to.

I've found that the download page sometimes has just the single Schumann piece, but sometimes also has all four movements of Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony. (I haven't found a pattern to the extra files being there/not being there.)

FWIW, if you can get the Tchaikovsky 5 (and from your message it looks like you did, GtrsRGr8), the recording seems to be by the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra / Fernando Lozano.

It is 5 movements. I wasn't absolutely sure that it was 5, and not 4 or 6, when I wrote that. Five movements, each in WMA and MP3, making a total of 10 tracks. And I still haven't gotten around to listening to them.

I suppose that the Mexico City Philharmonic has less prestige than, say, the Royal Philharmonic. But I don't have the ear to notice the difference in quality, assuming that there is a difference. I'm not sure that I could tell the difference if it was the local high school's band, for the matter. ha
