So you get two books for two bucks.
I have the same pairing in the reverse context: The Dragon's Path with a free copy of Leviathan Wakes. So you might want to double-check your library on this one, if your library's organization is as haphazard as mine.

This looks to be a regular price at 99-cents for a 500 page book. 2 and 3 are $4 each totaling 1500ish pages for $9. I'm about 50% through book one and it was enough to have me shell out for them all. I found it via Goodreads tied to SciFi romance but I feel its more Space Opera similar in feel to Doyle's Mageworld. The plot has some lead-in that may be too slow for action oriented readers and there is a POV bouncing that bogs it even more as things build to the tie-in. A bit of astronomy science stuff but few hard numbers for MilSciFi fans.

This month, Phoenix Pick's free book of the month is Lilith: A Snake in the Grass by Jack L. Chalker.

Quote:
Aliens are spying on Earth from one of the four worlds that make up the Warden Diamond. But it is impossible to send agents to any of the four worlds because of unique microscopic symbionts that make it impossible for visitors to leave the Diamond.

Seeking a unique solution, each of the four worlds making up the Diamond is sent a person whose mind has been stripped of everything and who is now controlled by an agent of the Confederacy.

Lilith is the first planet to be visited. Here, Cal Tremon, stripped of his own personality, must overcome incredible odds and survive not only the incredible perils of the foreign planet but his own controllers as well.
Additionally there is one other deal, which includes the above book as well as the remaining three books in the Lord of the Diamond series. This is available for a minimum price of $9.00 (Suggested price: $14.00). The additional books are:

Cerberus: A Wolf in the Fold
Spoiler:
Quote:
Cerberus is the second planet to be visited. Qwin Zhang is stripped of her personality and left naked on the planet with her mind now occupied by one of the Confederacy’s best operatives. Can she/he survive long enough to find out the truth about the deadly planet known as Cerberus?
Charon: A Dragon at the Gate
Spoiler:
Quote:
Park Lacoch's body (stripped of his own mind) is exiled to the hell-world of Charon, one of the Warden Diamond worlds being investigated for alien influences and presence. Can he survive long enough to complete his investigation in this unbearably hot world where strange creatures roam and witchcraft is a normal way of life?
Medua: A Tiger by the Tail
Spoiler:
Quote:
This frozen world is the last of the four worlds to be explored. But are Tarin Bul and his controller up to the job? The secret powers of the hated dictator, Lord Ypsir, are far more extensive than had been anticipated and may prove too much for them. Can the Agent With No Name save the mission?

Both deals are available at the same link, linked at the top of the post.

Well, I'm an old-school RPG geek, so I expect my mileage to vary significantly based on that point alone.

That wasn't the problem. If it's the one I'm thinking of it's really paranormal romance or so it was turning when I DNF'd it. Either way I'd be interested in your thoughts on it. I follow you on GR so if you leave a review I'll probably see it.

Hrm... the one series of Chalker's that I don't have... don't know when I'd find time to read them, though.

Sounds like a bargain. $9.00 minimum for a set of books that would cost a good bit more if purchased separately.

Eh, I don't mind PNR in general. There's a lot of dross in that field, true, but that's the case in any genre. (Heck, the book I'm editing now could be described as PNR, in that it's a romance with a distinct supernatural element. No vampires or shapeshifters, though.)

It's a good deal. (Although Phoenix Pick's ebooks are often rather poorly done and need tweaking a bit.) I'm very tempted myself - Chalker's books are often fun adventures in an SF context.

I do read some PNR, but I'm particular. The story/writing was good up to the point where I stopped, but like anyone else, certain things annoy me and this one hit the irritation button so I moved on. But as I said, I'll be interested in reading what you thought of it. Sometimes I give up on a book pretty easily.

The last three books are $8 each at Kobo, so even with coupons you'd need at least 65% off to beat $9 even with the first one free.

I wore out two paperpack sets of that series before I bought the ebooks. I keep hoping that The Pirates of the Thunder series will show up in electronic format someday.

Wildside Press has The Richard Wilson Minipack free, probably today only.

Richard Wilson (1920–1987) was a Nebula Award winning American science fiction writer and fan. He was a member of the Futurians, a New York group of science fiction fans, many of whom became editors and writers. The Futurians were based in New York City and were a major force in the development of science fiction writing and fandom in the years 1937-1945. Members who rose to later prominence included Isaac Asimov, James Blish, Virginia Kidd, Damon Knight, Cyril Kornbluth, Robert A. W. Lowndes, Judith Merril, Frederik Pohl, Larry Shaw, and Donald A. Wollheim.

Included in this MINIPACK™ are: “Murder from Mars,” “Stepsons of Mars,” “Dateline: Mars,” “Visitor from the Void,” and “The Venus Papers.”
