City of the Horizon is the first of Anton Gill's 1990's-ish three book series featuring Huy the Scribe, set in 18th dynasty Egypt.

It's on US Kindle Countdown for about 4 1/4 more days at $0.99 before going up to $3.99.

Neither of the other two books appears to be available as an e-book (on US Kindle, at least), but hopefully the other two will "arrive" soon.

Spoiler:
Quote:
1350 B.C. Egypt.

The 18th Dynasty.

Akhenaten, the reformist pharaoh, has died, and his successor, the child pharaoh Tutankhamun, is effectively controlled by political schemers with no love for Akhenaten's old supporters.

Many of them have lost their lives, but Huy, once a scribe in Akhenaten's court, is luckier: He's lost merely his home and the right to practice his trade.

His friend, Amotju encourages him to move to the south to get on with his life and he has his own reason: he believes his rival is trying to kill him and wants Huy to investigate.

In desperation, Huy becomes a travelling troubleshooter, the world's first private eye. He blunders into an increasingly violent and dangerous situation when Amotju stumbles on a tomb robbing operation and asks Huy to investigate.

In his first case, he is up against Egypt's powerful priesthood and a brutal gang of tomb-robbers, all while trying to evade the clutches of the secret police.

He’s thrown into his new role as an investigator, but can he find any clues that his friend is in danger?

And can he do it without getting himself into danger with the police and the dangerous gangs encircling him?

The answers lie just beyond the horizon…

City of the Horizon’ is a gripping historical thriller set in Ancient Egypt.

It is the first volume in the Egyptian Mysteries series.

Praise for Anton Gill:

‘Brilliantly researched history blending with a tense thriller to rank with the best of them.’ Reinhard Hesse

‘All you’ve ever wanted to know about sex in ancient Egypt…including a tour of the best brothels, plus tips on how to do it,…Exotic, erotic and highly recommended, like Gill’s first Egyptian mystery, City of the Horizon.’ Literary Review

‘Anton Gill supplies enough tension and breadth of description to keep one wanting to know the answer…and he is very readable.’ Times Literary Supplement

Anton Gill has been a freelance writer since 1984, specialising in European contemporary history but latterly branching out into historical fiction. He is the winner of the H H Wingate Award for non-fiction for his study of survivors of the Nazi concentration camps, ‘The Journey Back From Hell’.

Death of a Musketeer by Sarah D'Almeida is the first in D'Almeida's series featuring Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and, of course, D'Artagnan. I read a couple of these in DTB many years ago, and enjoyed them.

It's a repeat US Kindle Countdown deal, at $0.99 for about 1 more day before going up to $1.99.

Spoiler:
Quote:
When D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis discover the corpse of a beautiful woman who looks like the Queen of France, they vow to see that justice is done. They do not know that their investigation will widen from murder to intrigue to conspiracy, bring them the renewed enmity of Cardinal Richelieu and shake their fate in humanity. Through duels and doubts, they pursue the truth, even when their search brings them to the sphere of King Louis XIII himself and makes them confront secrets best forgotten.

Free Today On Amazon UK (Endeavour press) - The Nursery Rhyme Murders by Anthony Litton

'When Allan Rutherford is found, fallen, his head cracked open, Beldon Magna is devastated. More unsettling still, a child’s mask had been left over his face, a wide smile upon it. DI Calderwood and DS Bulmer, leading the investigation, are as unnerved as the locals. Before they can solve it, another body is found; like the doctor’s, it is staged in a gruesome parody of a nursery rhyme, upon a tuffet and riddled with spiders. One thing is clear: one of Beldon Magna’s own residents is responsible. The hunt is on…
As the village tries to go about normal life, idle gossip reveals that there are plenty secrets people are trying to hide. Desmond Appleby and his partner Gwilym, end up the inadvertent sleuths once more, and may be able to give the police the break they need. Will they be able to convince the police of their theory before the killer strike again? Or will more people fall victim to the Nursery Rhyme Murders…? '

Not sure why this one in particular has dropped, but as I got the first one free at Christmas, I'm not going to complain

The Girl Who Played with Fire - 99p at Amazon UK

The middle volume in Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy. Looks to be the same price in the US, accounting for the exchange rate ($1.54).

Killing Cousins (An Inspector Faro Mystery No.4) - Alanna Knight
-Scottish Victorian Mystery
-St. Martin's, 1992

Amazon US----Amazon UK

Quote:
Victorian D I Faro's visit to a remote Orkney island erupts in horrors. Two bodies, the village simpleton possibly murdered and the week-old corpse of the laird's wife removed from her coffin are laid out side-by-side on the ancient Odin stone of sacrifice. A bizarre Romeo and Juliet? Who could have played this monstrous trick - and why? For this is just the threshold of terrors to come and danger for Faro and his family.

Spoiler:
According to the polls, it's only a matter of time — and not that long a time — before the United States elects its first female president. Which will make her husband — what?

Well, if he's the ex-cop who solved the murder of the president's first husband and brought the killers to justice … and if he's not the kind of guy to stand on formality … and if he doesn't want to be the head of the FBI … and if he takes out a license and becomes the first private eye to live in the White House …

That would make him The President's Henchman.

Jim McGill's first case is to find out who is stalking a member of the White House press corps, before that stalker turns the tables on McGill and maybe even threatens the president herself. He also has to be a shadow advisor to a young Air Force investigator who is looking into a he-said she-said charge of adultery leveled against a female colonel working at the Pentagon, a case with the potential to derail the new president's administration before it has a chance to begin.
This title is on US Kindle Countdown again. It's at $1.99 for about 6 1/4 more days before going up to $4.99.

Nailed, also by Joseph Flynn, is also on US Kindle Countdown at $1.99 for about 3 1/4 more days before going up to $4.99.

Quote:
Ron Ketchum saw his share of the dark side of life as a cop in Los Angeles. Then he left L.A. to become the chief of police in the Sierra Nevada resort town of Goldstrike. One sunny morning in the mountains, though, he comes upon a crime unlike anything he’s ever seen before.

He finds the body of an African American man nailed to a tree.

The victim is a highly respected minister, and his father is the nationally known televangelist Jimmy Thunder. Ron, on the other hand, has described himself in court as a recovering bigot.

Goldstrike’s mayor for life and movie icon, Clay Steadman, wants Ron to catch the killer fast. Adding to the pressure, the victim’s grandmother comes to town. She tells the media mob that has descended on Goldstrike that God will curse the town until the killer is caught.

That’s when a rogue mountain lion begins attacking people. At first, the attacks happen on the wilderness outskirts of Goldstrike. Then the predator moves into town, leaping a fence into a family’s backyard. Finally, it turns the tables on one of the hunters sent out to bring it down.

Looking for a killer, hunting a lion and defending his own integrity — makes being a cop in L.A. seem like the good old days.

Flynn started out with a number of conventionally published titles, but is now into self-publishing via his own Stray Dog Press. I've read many of his books, both conventionally published and self-published, and have enjoyed them all, including these two, regardless.

Free today on Amazon UK (Pre-order) - The Thirteenth Coffin by Nigel McCrery

'Stretching along the shelf, standing upright, were twelve wooden coffins. Nine were closed, and three open . . . with little dolls standing inside them . . .
It was supposed to be the most special day of her life - until the unthinkable happened. Leslie Petersen is shot dead on her wedding day. With the bride's killer vanished without a trace, the investigation into the murder grinds to a halt before it's even begun.
But then, the decomposing body of an unidentified homeless man is found in an old Cold War bunker, and DCI Mark Lapslie makes a bizarre discovery. Hidden near the body is a shrine full of miniature wooden coffins. Each coffin contains a little doll, all dressed differently.
One of the dolls is dressed as a bride - could this be a link to Leslie's murder? And if so, who do the other dolls represent? Can Lapslie and his team stop the countdown of the 'dying dolls' before it's too late?'

The Crucifix Killer (Robert Hunter Book 1) by Chris Carter. Currently free at Amazon UK

Appears to be a promotion for the next hardback release in the series in a few weeks.

When the body of a young woman is discovered in a derelict cottage in the middle of Los Angeles National Forest, Homicide Detective Robert Hunter finds himself entering a horrific and recurring nightmare. Naked, strung from two wooden posts, the victim was sadistically tortured before meeting an excruciatingly painful death. All the skin has been ripped from her face - while she was still alive. On the nape of her neck has been carved a strange double-cross: the signature of a psychopath known as the Crucifix Killer.

But that's impossible. Because two years ago, the Crucifix Killer was caught and executed. Could this therefore be a copycat killer? Or could the unthinkable be true? Is the real killer still out there, ready to embark once again on a vicious and violent killing spree, selecting his victims seemingly at random, taunting Robert Hunter with his inability to catch him?

Hunter and his rookie partner are about to enter a nightmare beyond imagining.

Free Today On Amazon UK (Endeavour press) - City of Dreams by Anton Gill

'Egypt, the 18th Dynasty. Huy was a scribe during Akhenten’s reign before being forced to quit his profession and become the world’s first private eye. He needs to work discreetly to avoid attracting attention of the secret police. But working with a low profile could be tricky, because his latest case has every indication of becoming a huge, high profile one. Someone in ancient Thebes is killing young wealthy girls, quickly, efficiently and silently. So much so that without Huy the Scribe’s natural forensic talent, no one would realise that they had even been murdered. Together with the policeman Merymose, Huy begins to search for the murderer, realising the serial killer must be a person of terrifying power and influence… Can he find the killer without attracting too much attention to himself? 'Candlewood Lake, Connecticut. Mark Trembley and Paige Sanchez were embarking on a new life together. They had just moved into their new home. The home which Mark had bought before they met, after returning from duty in Afghanistan with the Navy SEALS. But as they looked out over tree-covered hills, admiring the panoramic views, Paige noticed that something wasn’t quite right. Hooded men dressed in camouflage and carrying assault rifles were running up the sloping lawn toward them. Only through the experience he had gained through many years of training and time in combat was Mark able to protect Paige and get to safety. But Mark wasn’t able to protect his step-children who were out in the local park with their babysitter. By the time they emerge from the attack, the children and the babysitter are gone. Who were those men and what did they want? Mark may have left the Navy SEALS but he certainly hasn’t left the heat of battle with his new job at the FBI. In the weeks preceding the attack Mark had been working his way into the fringes of a mafia family, but it isn’t organised crime families that are the threat. FBI intelligence has shown that ISIS are in the process of bringing the war to America by infiltrating the mafia and placing sleeper cells within it. Mark is in their way - and now they want him removed. Can Mark stave of ‘The Ultimate Threat’ in his mission to save not only his family but the freedom of America as well? '

Partners in Crime was a US Kindle Countdown deal back in June of last year, and is on US Kindle Countdown again just now, at $0.99 for about 1 3/4 more days before going up to $1.99.

It's a "box set" of five legal thrillers, mostly "first in series":

Rebecca Forster: Hostile Witness
Paul Levine: To Speak for the Dead
Scott Pratt: An Innocent Client
Sheldon Siegel: Special Circumstances
Pamela Samuels Young: Buying Time
