Hi, I'm a newbie here but in a bit of bother.
My Kobo Mini stopped working recently and I could not open it up to read anything. It basically took me back to the setup page where it asks for my language, then to connect to either my wifi or to a computer via USB. I did this to update it but it constantly failed.
Now the stupid part ........ I formatted the whole device and I am stuck with the setup page and just seem to be going round and round and .......
My wife also has a Kobo Mini so I copied all the files from hers direct to mine but this made no difference. It's still stuck at the setup page.
Is this what they call a "brick" now or can it be salvaged to work again. ?
Have I wiped everything or do I need an iso file to resume my reading?

One thing to note is that your Kobo ereader does not expose all it's storage partitions over USB. To see those you will need to remove the μSD card from the Mini and insert it into a reader connected to your computer. If you are using Windows, the two Linux partitions on the card will not be readable so disregard any popups about formatting the card.

You could try removing the μSD card from your wife's Mini and see if that works in your Mini. If it does, then you could purchase a new μSD card for your Mini and copy an image to it. I will send you a PM with links to the Mini image and to the thread on MobileRead with the instructions on how to use the image.

Just another thought...... Can I not just take my wifes SD card out and copy all files on it to the SD card that is currently in my Kobo ?

You can but you need to do an image copy, a simple file copy will not work. The Image creator mentioned in the Memory Upgrade Mod Guide (With Pictures) will allow you to create the image and then the Image writer will let you copy it to a new μSD card for your Mini. My suggestion would be to create an image from your wife's μSD card and then test by installing her μSD card in your Mini. If it works, you can carry on with obtaining a new μSD card and copying the image to it. If it doesn't work, your Mini has other issues and is unlikely to be fixable.

Rather often, the issue turns out to be the μSD card has hardware issues and a replacement is needed so I generally suggest using a new card rather than recycling the one currently in your Kobo.

I have just decided to get a new SD card and write the new image to it so it is fresh.
Once I've formatted it, Can I just smack the new image on to it or does it need to be partitioned first?

You will just need the Image Writer and no need to partition first since the partition structure from the image will be used. I use the SD Memory Card Formatter from the SD Association to wipe the card before I copy the image to the card though that is more to check the card than worry about the format.

Hi David,

I have formatted my SD card and successfully written the new image to it [It did say success at the end]but alas, my reader is still not playing ball.
When I attach it to my pc and connect to the Kobo Desktop app, it tells me it is downloading an update, then installing it and then it tells me there is an error with my Internet connection [which there is not] and then it just stops.
I am just left with the setup screen and it can't move on from there. [Pl see attached photos].
Is there anything left to try or is my reader totally lost?
