At least for MobiPocket WIKIPEDIA is already compiled in several sizes with and without pictures. I use a distinct offline version of Wikipedia in my still working PALM TX. It's a version without pictures. Very easy to use and very comfortable for a quick look. It's not a must always having the very latest versions.

There are files available < 2GB. Not that large in my opinion.

For example:

In German and Mobipocket and TomeRaider:

Several languages and file formats, ready to use (sorry, it's a link to the german version of Wikipedia):

So, I'm not sure what you're looking for exactly. Your requests strike me as unfeasible; they're not even provided for on an iPad! But maybe there was something more subtle that I'm missing?
<offtopic>
Actually there is an offline Wikipedia app for the iPhone/iPad, which has all the content articles, but no pictures, discussion pages, etc...
I think it is in the region of 2.5Gb to download the content.

Stopped by a Sony store today and they were out of eBook Readers altogether. The clerk told me the new line was due sometime between mid and late September.

I didn't think of that! That would be pretty decent for looking back over what you read off the web.

If you are interested in this, you can install the prs+ hacker firmware and it allows the 950 to download the webpage to the device. So it will be possible, most likely, with T1 as well, using outside firmware.

But we were discussing what sony includes out of the box.

As far as how many gigs is wikipedia requires and how many programs a dinky little reader can reasonably be expected to run, consider

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WikiReader

the only trouble is its pitifully unsexy screen.

You can even add languages and dictionaries.
Again, the only trouble is its pitifully unsexy screen.

Here's another video review. It shows the 8 font size screen and the 7 available fonts:
  • Original
  • Amasis
  • Frutiger New
  • Palatino nova
  • Really No 2
  • Univers Next
  • Verdana

I had this crazy misunderstanding where I thought the pinch zoom might be like the ultimate font resizer. Not only would it make the letters bigr/smallr, it would also reflow the text. Boy, was I wrong.
To reflow the text, it's just the 8 sizes. Zoom is just a tool for pdf then? That's good I guess but it would be a LOT better if it worked with text reflow.
Another mystery that will need trying out.

The more I see it, the more it really is just a slightly improved version of the 350/650 and just a smaller version of the 950.
It's basically a 950, with a smaller screen, that I don't feel bad spending the money on because it's not a lot of money to spend on a little gadget.

If people see it that way, a reduced price 950 (which they won't because they don't deal with their problems by obsessing on mobilereadcom), then this should be extremely competitive and sell like hot cakes.
That's what sony did, they made the great 950 attainable. And the peasants will now rush to feel like nouveaux riches.

Any word on if you can load your own fonts or if that font list is fixed?

Cheers,
Simon.

After VAT it's almost the same as $149. Maybe $20 more which could be add'l customs/shipping costs.

Nice to see similar pricing so far.
Latest pricing on the UK site: the PRS-300, 350 and 650 have been removed.
Now I see only the PRS-T1, described as "Reader™ Wi-Fi®", and a message saying "For £120.00"

If you click on the '3 models found' tab, the £120 price is for the PRS-300.
(Oddly the 505 is listed as a current model, while the 350 and 650 are previous models)
None of them are actually available to buy.

The website is now saying 'coming this October' instead of mid-September.

Darn.

They've been talking about October since the first news. Maybe mid-September is when they start taking preorders?

The Sony models currently have a zoom feature with slider bars that works on EPUB's. I am currently reading a non-fiction EPUB that has maps and photos in it. I have been using the zoom feature to study the images better although it's a somewhat slow and awkward process. The pinch zoom looks like it would be more convenient and intuitive for this purpose. I wouldn't want the text to reflow in this case.

Up until today, the official Sony Style website said 'coming in mid-September'.

If there's some other 'they', 'they' weren't official.
