And I should have usded the money to pay bills but I fueled my ebook addiction.

I have 313 kindle books. probably 100 Nook books and a dozen oe so kobo books and some books on iBook. If I was to stop buying books today it will take me 3 or 4 years to read what I have lol

Every day i check my kindle wish list and see if any dropped in price, same with audio companions. Sometimes One will go on a steep sale and I will buy it. The other day some of my wish list ebooks dropped by 80% and i snatched them up

I purchased 6 books in September, most of which I got less than $5 each, so good deals. They're all books I want to read and are near the top of my list so I'll get to them soon at least. Most are mystery/suspense which I'm really into lately so that helps! Still gotta do better in October though, as I still have like 300+ unread and that's not including some hundreds more books I have sitting in Calibre. What a "problem" to have!

September wasn't my best month.

I purchased eight books and read only two (both library books, no less) so my goal is to read these eight ASAP! My weak defense is I used an expiring gift card so they didn't cost me cash but I wouldn't have grabbed all eight if cash was required.

For the year I only read seven of my 19 purchases. Ugh!

Honestly, I think it is sales that truly rule our addiction, not to mention the lack of space ebooks take up. There is no way I'd have 50 unread books, much less over 1000 if they were taking up space in my bookshelf.

I missed out on a couple of Audible big sale purchases because I didn't complete the order. When I noticed today that I had a couple of items in my cart, I realized they went back to full price. As neither of these books were part of series currently being read, I lucked out. This is good. I shouldn't be buying ANY books while I still have a credit card balance. I have plenty to read and no excuse.

Just looked at my total purchases (I count freebies as purchases) for September. I purchased 46 books which is good by my standards while reading 63 books for the month. Purchases ranged from Baen's monthly bundle to Leverage in Death to Edible Memory: The Lure of Heirloom Tomatoes and Other Forgotten Foods to the PRTG Network Monitor User Manual. It was a slow month for library reads as I only borrowed 7 books.

I splurged today (well, yesterday now) in a different medium, and not only do I not feel guilty about it, but aside from the physical discomfort, it actually made me happier than I’ve been in a while.

I don’t get out to my local used-media store often, and when I do, I usually end up trading a sizable load of stuff in and buying rather less than the credit earned by doing so. As a result, I’ve had a credit slip for nearly $300 just sitting in my wallet for... well, long enough that the bar code wouldn’t scan and the cashier had to key the numbers in manually. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Anyway, my money’s been tight for the last two years. Really tight. My ebook purchases have been funded exclusively by reward points from a couple of apps; I average earning maybe $10 a week that way. I don’t remember the last time I bought a full-price, traditionally published novel, but it has to have been at least one and probably two years ago.

So it felt really good to take my sizable Blu-ray wish list into that used-media store today, find half a dozen things on it, and enjoy the freedom of just grabbing them and taking them up to the counter. I spent about $70 in credit, got a little cash back for what I traded in (paper books that I’d replaced with ebooks), and consider myself to have come out ahead. True, some of the movies were missing digital codes, and most of the stuff on my list wasn’t there at all, but I’ll live. I found a couple of things I’ve really been wanting to see, and it’s going to feel very nice to kick back and do so with zero guilt.

Once in a while, adding to the stack has benefits that can’t be measured on a spreadsheet.

I absolutely LOVE this. This isn't about addiction, it's about using money wisely and still ending up with a net gain. I have gone for two different stretches in my life where I was without a full-time job for more than a year each, and the used book/media store were salvation.

My best find ever was a box set of Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibi. They are out of print and were worth $350 minimum at the time. But the used store had priced them at $90 for the whole shrink-wrapped set. The books are now worth well over $600! Best credit slip I had ever traded in.

Absolutely. Ultimately this thread shouldn't be about sheer numbers, but about frugality. And not in its penny-pinching connotation, but in getting full value for your expenditures and enjoying them, guilt-free. Great story.

Yes, everybody should take a look at Guttenberg (I was actually a volunteer typist for them in the early 90s). But, if you are like me and primarily read genre fiction, your options aren't that big. I've read all but a handful of the science fiction, fantasy, western and detective novels that are there. Each year only brings one or two new ones of interest. Sigh. I have a couple of Jules Verne and Max Brand left, but that's about it. Oh and the new John Williams Hopkins sea yarn. This isn't a critique about Guttenberg - they can only do what has become available copyright free. One of the books I typed had to be removed because of the stupid Mickey Mouse Protection Act.

Well, I went “off the wagon” earlier this week, with my first full-price purchase in... several months, at least. Probably more than a year. In all fairness, it was (a) on my wish list, (b) for imminent consumption, and (c) I have a birthday coming up.

See, I’ve gotten behind on my Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant reading. I got off my butt in late September and loaded some purchased-but-unread books of hers onto my reader to make that my October theme. First up was Magic for Nothing from her InCryptid series, which I liked so much that I immediately bought Tricks for Free for later-this-month reading. Meanwhile, I read Rolling in the Deep and am 30% finished with its sequel, Into the Drowning Deep - both horror stories about deep-sea-dwelling mermaids. (“Drowning” gets extra cool points for being stealth climate fiction. I wasn’t expecting that, but it makes total sense and is uncomfortably relevant. It also makes one heck of a plot driver.) Still upcoming are the second and third of her “Wayward Children” novellas, and I’ll most likely tackle Tricks for Free after those.

If I still have time in October, I may crack into her “October Daye” series.
