If HomeInMyShoes is going 40's, then I'll go 50's. For no reason other than 30's seems like it would be too long ago given the clue about it being within the lifetime of some members. If that's wrong, we can work our way up the decades.

Yes, the 1950s. Just.

The US and the Commonwealth agreed on a new standard for the inch in 1958, and it came into force on 1st January 1959, when the yard was defined as 0.9144m exactly and since there are 36 inches in a yard, that made an inch exactly 2.54cm.

Before that, the Imperial inch was a little smaller (approx. 2.539988cm, but not defined in terms of the metre), and the US inch was a little larger (exactly 2.54000508cm, and defined in terms of the metre, with 1 metre being precisely 39.37 inches).

This one is probably super-easy, but I feel like sharing:

I've recently returned from a trip to Paradise, and despite the road signs saying, "Paradise: No Exit" we did indeed make it back. A few years ago many of you will have seen this place as a movie setting for an extremely grand residence. Whose residence, and can you give a name or two for the building involved?

Extra geek points: in our recent visit to Paradise we actually stumbled across a set for another movie currently being filmed there (as well as in several other locations). Care to take a guess as to what this movie might be?
