I'm sold. I just pre-ordered a black prs-600 this morning from Borders. I am sure I will have plenty of questions about converting and uploading ebooks soon after I get it.

I am a big fan of Baen books and they seem to make things real easy and cost effective (which is good because even though I have a shelf stuffed with their books I will be buying many of them over again.)for those purchasing ebooks from them. I have subscribed to their magazine for a while now and am sad to see it go next year.

I am probably going to switch from the 700 to the 600. I am having issues with my eyesight (getting old stinks) and could use a sharper display. I'm torn between the silver and the black. The 700 has a bit of chrome on it that tends to reflect light into my eyes occasionally. I like the silver but am worried it could be reflective.

Many Baen ebooks can be downloaded for free at The Fifth Imperium. The Baen CDs hosted there are freely-distributable disks provided to promote the sale of the books contained within.

I'm curious to know how many people have actually pre-ordered one of the soon-to-be-released Sony Readers.

I would like to get the 300, due to the form factor. However, I just bought two new, different Readers while recently in the U.S.

Does anyone know if we'll be able to convert the e-books from the B&N or Amazon store via a program such as calibre to a format readable by the sony reader? That's the main thing I'm worried about right now when deciding which device to buy.

There is a program to convert them, however you would have to remove the DRM for them first which may be illegal... it's a point of debate around here all the time.

That said, you can't buy eBooks from Amazon unless you have a kindle.

I do think that B&N will eventually sell ePub format which the sony reader does support. So, no conversion will be needed.

Maybe. If B&N does sell ePub it's likely it will have eReader style DRM which would need an update for the Sony to support (I think).

They do plan to sell EPUB (or, rather, Fictionwise guys wanted to before they got bought), however they plan to use eReader DRM, not Adobe's ADEPT. It is unlinkely that Sony Reader will support it.
