New FREEBIE for Kindle from amazon:
The Mark by Jason Pinter $FREE ~4 out of 5 stars, based on 34 reviews http://www.amazon.com/The-Mark-ebook...4183584&sr=1-3 Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly Debut novelist Pinter turns in a stellar performance, taking to the suspense-thriller field with great confidence and greater promise. Disappointed to find that his new job with the prestigious New York Gazette is all pap pieces and obits, 24-year-old freshman journalist Henry Parker jumps at the chance to work with the paper's top reporter on a where-are-they-now look at the scum of New York. Arriving at the apartment of ex-con Luis Guzman with some follow-up questions, Henry finds a scene right out of Goodfellas: a big guy pistol-whipping a terrified Guzman and his wife. Before Henry knows what's happening, the victims turn the table, the assailant is killed, and Henry is left holding the smoking gun. From there, the cub reporter goes on the run—his only ally an unsuspecting NYU coed—while trying figure out how he became wanted by the NYPD, the FBI and the mob. Though some of his situations can strain credibility, Pinter's a wizard at punching out page-turning action, and the voice of his headstrong protagonist is sure to win readers over; his wild ride should thrill any suspense junky. Along Came a Demon (Whisperings)
by Linda Welch http://www.amazon.com/Along-Came-Dem...pd_sim_kinc_43 ~4 out 5 star rating, based on 8 reviews $0.99 Product Description I'm told the dead are all around us. I wouldn't know about that, I see only the violently slain. They can be victims of hit-and-run, innocents caught in a cross-fire, the murdered. They whisper to me and they never, ever, forget the face of their killer. I've learned to live with my uncanny ability, in fact I've made a career out of it. The departed aren't the only supernaturals I see. No, they're not vampires or werewolves or fae - those things don't exist. We live side by side with what some call the Otherworldy. That's too much of a mouthful for me, I call them demons. If you saw them as I do, you'd know why. Right now I'm trying to track down a missing six year-old boy whose mother was murdered. Or maybe she wasn't. To further complicate the case, Clarion PD gave me a partner I'd rather shoot than work with. I can't tell them he's a demon. They'd think I'm crazy. I'm Tiff Banks. Welcome to my world. ************************************************** ***** If you like that one, this same author also has 2 other books available for Kindle. They don't qualify for this list, unfortunately, as they are priced at $2.50 and $2.00. I did, however, post all the information for all 3 books in a separate thread in the "Deals, Freebies, and Resources" forum, the thread is titled "$5.49 total for 3 books for Kindle by author Linda Welch." For quick reference here, the 2 other books are called Mindbender, $2.50, and Galen's Gate (Novels of the Systems), $2.00. |

Aaron Shepard of Shepard Publications thinks that children's ebooks are being priced too high and has decided to offer his books on Kindle at a penny apiece. He has started with four books in the Storybooks series and promises to add more if these do well. What you give up, though, are any illustrations from the paper versions of the book. For some stories, I suspect this won't make a difference, although it would not work for books for toddlers. Each of these books has a specific theme, are generally written for ages 4-9 and range in size from 900 to 1500 words. (I'm all for long novels, but not children's bedtime stories!)
Aaron's Storybook #1: The Legend of Lightning Larry A cowboy with a huge smile, a gun that shoots bolts of light, and a hankering for lemonade takes on Evil-Eye McNeevil's outlaw gang. An original tall tale. Aaron's Storybook #2: The Legend of Slappy Hooper Slappy is the world's biggest, fastest, bestest sign painter, but he's too good -- his pictures keep coming to life. An American tall tale. Aaron's Storybook #3: The Baker's Dozen Van Amsterdam, the baker, is as honest as he can be -- but he may have something left to learn. A Saint Nicholas tale from Dutch colonial New York. Aaron's Storybook #4: The Gifts of Wali Dad Wali Dad, a humble grass-cutter, never asked for wealth-- so why can't he give it away? A tale of India and Pakistan. When I did a search for Shepard Publications in the Kindle store, I discovered that I had already bought a couple of books from them. This is the same publisher that has Skeeter: A Cat Tale and Pacific Avenue, by Anne L. Watson and Timothy Tolliver and the Bully Basher, by Aaron Shepard, all for a penny apiece in the Kindle store. I'm only part way thru Skeeter, but it is a laugh-out-loud read (at least, if you have ever been owned by a cat). In addition to these, I discovered four more titles they've released recently, all children's books, it appears, of around 50 pages: The Monkey King: A Superhero Tale of China, Retold from The Journey to the West ($0.01) The Songs of Power: A Finnish Tale of Magic, Retold from the Kalevala ($0.01) The Mountain of Marvels: A Celtic Tale of Magic, Retold from The Mabinogion ($0.50) The Magic Flyswatter: A Superhero Tale of Africa, Retold from the Mwindo Epic ($0.50) |

Phoenix Tales: Stories of Death & Life is now back to 99 cents
Phoenix Tales: Stories of Death & Life
by Gregory Bernard Banks http://www.amazon.com/Phoenix-Tales-...4385562&sr=1-1 ~4.5 out of 5 stars, based on 13 reviews $0.99 Editorial Reviews Review In this collection of seventeen stories written by Gregory Banks, death is constant death of individuals, cultures, worlds and always there is mystery. The mystery of what lies beyond death is present, of course. And the narrators of these stories usually have a positive optimistic view of death a faith either spiritual, cosmic or magical, that all things are working together. But there is mystery in these stories. Often the puzzle or conundrum surrounds the actual cause or generative force that causes the death. There is also the long wait that accompanies dying. Whether the person waiting is a dying man who is continually revived, a faithful best friend beside a respirator, a long-dead son awaiting a spiritual reunion with his now-dead father, or a dying person who doesn t quite understand that death has occurred or is in fact taking place... ...Many of the stories touch on healing of some kind, healing created by a group, healing for a group, unwanted healing. The characters are normal everyday folks most probably African-American but their races generally do not matter. They face something common to all people: death and dying when racial identification, wealth and politics take a back seat to finality. Race, wealth, and politics aren t dismissed, mind you, the viving people at the nursing home are definitely powerful figures backed by a powerful government. But for the most part, in these slice of life supernaturally-tinged stories, death is a lonesome valley that these characters usually travel alone... ...A collection of stories about death could be troubling and haunting to some. But it is the most common of human journeys. And Greg Banks has written about it with hope, faith, love and joy. I highly recommend this book. Especially for those spiritual and psychological types who ponder the importance and meaning of death and the journey of the dying. --Carole McDonnell, author of Wind Follower The author has marvelous figures of speech; I don t think I ve seen it as thick and apt since the early career of Roger Zelazny. Death is a central theme; one of the stories, A Cup of Time, has death agents reminiscent of the Incarnations in my novel On A Pale Horse. That s not to suggest it is any copy of mine; the death agent here is a luscious young-looking woman. (It can be hard to tell a woman s age, especially when she s immortal.) The lead story, Escape Velocity, sets the tone: folk are kept alive interminably, and some really want to escape that fate. That is, to die. It makes perfect sense to me. So the adventure is how he manages to escape to death. Touched made me remember Olaf Stapleton s Odd John. Some are slice of life (or death) pieces, with human insights... But for an experience in description and emotion, this is good. --FeBlueberry 2005 Hipiers.com newsletter Product Description An elderly man desperate for the right to die with dignity. A young woman trapped in a city that's seemingly alive. A man living on borrowed time...literally. The short, sweet tale of a savior of childhood souls. These are just a few of the stories found in Phoenix Tales: Stories of Death & Life (Second Edition), the new revision of the highly acclaimed short story collection from Gregory Bernard Banks. Compared to authors such as Roger Zelazny and Harlan Ellison, Banks takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotion, combining the colorful storytelling style of the Golden Age of science fiction with thoughtful exploration of the contemporary issues of today. These stories will take you on a wondrous and emotional journey through tales of both the fantastic and the mundane, and may leave you appreciating life just a little bit more. |

I think this is this month's $1 Orbit book...
Debatable Space
by Philip Palmer http://www.amazon.com/Debatable-Spac...4395324&sr=1-1 $1.00 From Publishers Weekly It's rarely a good sign when an author tells readers with sad grasshopper minds to skip ahead if they're bored, as Palmer does in this muddled debut space opera. After grabbing readers with action sequences revolving around a plan to use former President of Humanity Lena Smith against her despotic son, Peter, whom Lena tenderly calls the most evil human being who has ever lived, a series of long, rambling Excerpts from the Thought Diary of Lena Smith, 2004– bring the action to a screeching halt. Lena's description of her thousand-year life and accounts of her sexual escapades and theology will weary many readers. The concepts, writing and plotting leave a great deal to be desired, and Palmer's attempt at humor centered on the notion of powerful, intelligent flame beasts addicted to bad television also falls flat. (Jan.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Product Description Flanagan (who is, for want of a better word, a pirate) has a plan. It seems relatively simple: kidnap Lena, the Cheo's daughter, demand a vast ransom for her safe return, sit back and wait. Only the Cheo, despotic ruler of the known universe, isn't playing ball. Flanagan and his crew have seen this before, of course, but since they've learned a few tricks from the bad old days and since they know something about Lena that should make the plan foolproof, the Cheo's defiance is a major setback. It is a situation that calls for extreme measures. Luckily, Flanagan has considerable experience in this area . . . Last edited by Xia; 10-01-2009 at 07:24 AM. Reason: Formattin |

Giving Chase, by Lauren Dane, was free last August. If you missed it then or are new to Kindle, you can get it free once again, until October 31.
Book Description Together they find a special love-can it survive the threat stalking her? Some small towns grow really good looking men! This is the case with the four Chase brothers. The home grown hotties are on the wishlist of every single woman in town and Maggie Wright is no exception. Maggie has finally had it with the men she's been dating but a spilled plate of chili cheese fries drops Shane Chase right into her lap. The sheriff is hot stuff but was burned by a former fiancee and is quite happy to play the field. After Shane's skittishness sends him out the door, Maggie realizes that Kyle Chase has had his eye on her from the start. Now that Shane has messed up, Kyle has no intention of letting anything stop him from wooing her right into his bed. Despite Maggie's happiness and growing love with Kyle, a dark shadow threatens everything-she's got a stalker and he's not happy at all. In the end, Maggie will need her wits, strength and the love of her man to get her out alive. Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex, graphic language, and some violent situations. |

Take care of yourself (but what a bad time to get sick, as it's the first of the month).
Three new freebies on Kindle: The Demon Awakens, by R.A. Salvatore Book Description In THE DEMON AWAKENS, bestselling author R. A. Salvatore creates an astonishing new world for readers to explore--and an intrepid hero to lead the way: Elbryan Wynden, who must confront the dark tides of destiny in his epic search for justice and peace . . . A great evil has awakened in the land of Corona, a terrible demon determined to spread death and misery. His goblin armies and fearsome giants ravage the settlements of the frontier, and in the small village of Dundallis their merciless attack leaves behind two shattered orphans: Pony and her lifelong friend, the youth Elbryan. Taken in by elves, Elbryan is raised to become a formidable ranger--a fateful role that will lead him into harrowing confrontation. Meanwhile, on a far-off island, a shower of gemstones will fall onto the black sand shores. These heaven-sent stones carry within them an incredible power--the key to all that is good in the world and all that is evil, and it is up to one young monk to liberate them from the corrupt monastery that harvests them. Pray that they don't fall into the wrong, clawed hands . . . The Templar Legacy, by Steve Berry Book Description The ancient order of the Knights Templar possessed untold wealth and absolute power over kings and popes . . . until the Inquisition, when they were wiped from the face of the earth, their hidden riches lost. But now two forces vying for the treasure have learned that it is not at all what they thought it was–and its true nature could change the modern world. Cotton Malone, one-time top operative for the U.S. Justice Department, is enjoying his quiet new life as an antiquarian book dealer in Copenhagen when an unexpected call to action reawakens his hair-trigger instincts–and plunges him back into the cloak-and-dagger world he thought he’d left behind. It begins with a violent robbery attempt on Cotton’s former supervisor, Stephanie Nelle, who’s far from home on a mission that has nothing to do with national security. Armed with vital clues to a series of centuries-old puzzles scattered across Europe, she means to crack a mystery that has tantalized scholars and fortune-hunters through the ages by finding the legendary cache of wealth and forbidden knowledge thought to have been lost forever when the order of the Knights Templar was exterminated in the fourteenth century. But she’s not alone. Competing for the historic prize–and desperate for the crucial information Stephanie possesses–is Raymond de Roquefort, a shadowy zealot with an army of assassins at his command. Welcome or not, Cotton seeks to even the odds in the perilous race. But the more he learns about the ancient conspiracy surrounding the Knights Templar, the more he realizes that even more than lives are at stake. At the end of a lethal game of conquest, rife with intrigue, treachery, and craven lust for power, lies a shattering discovery that could rock the civilized world–and, in the wrong hands, bring it to its knees. Starfist: First to Fight, by David Sherman & Dan Cragg Book Description "Marines, we have just become a low-tech deep recon patrol . . ." Stranded in a hellish alien desert, stripped of their strategic systems, quick reaction force, and supporting arms, and carrying only a day's water ration, Marine Staff Sergeant Charlie Bass and his seven-man team faced a grim future seventy-five light-years from home. The only thing between his Marines and safety was eighty-five miles of uncharted, waterless terrain and two thousand bloodthirsty savages with state-of-the-art weapons in their hands and murder on their minds. But the enemy didn't reckon on the warrior cunning of Marines' Marine Charlie Bass and the courage of the few good men who would follow him anywhere--even to death. . . |

I've read The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry and I thought it was pretty good. It's a lot like a Dan Brown novel with constant tension through out the book. Lots of short chapters that end in little cliff hangers. Not necessarily historically accurate.
