Got my new Oasis today, first impressions

My oasis this morning had a completeley dead battery.

It was fully drained on a screen that had a picture of a battery with an Exclamation point in it.

I only received it Monday. I think I may have to send this one back in, because that is not supposed to happen.

Wouldn't that rather depend what it's been doing since Monday?

My Kindle has been essentially solidly indexing books for 9 days now, and indexing will drain a fully-charged battery flat in well under a day, because it's running the CPU flat-out. Reading for a day certainly shouldn't drain the battery.

I would be happy if I could get my kindle to last 4 days on a charge. Even on my other kindles, I have to charge from 2-5 days, depending on how much I read. This new Oasis seems to have a tad less life so far than say the Voyage. I am on my second day of lots of reading and will probably charge this evening. So 2 days of reading. Or 2 full sized books with about 350-400 pages of them. I don't like letting it go too far down the battery though, so I am guessing it will have a 3rd left by then. So I suppose I could technically maybe read 3 books and go almost all the way down.

I also think that me having the font on bold 3 might take a bit more juice and I am on size 4. All those things matter. Its why you can't really count in days, you have to know how many hours you read, how many pages, how big your font is, how high the light is, is wifi on or off. Mine is off, only on for a few minutes here and there.

I should (finally!) finish loading my library this evening (the last batch of books has only 160 left to index), so once that's done I'll start doing some proper measurements of battery life.

How many documents have you added?

I've also noticed for the first time the manual says low powered computer USB ports may not charge it. I don't know if this has applied to any previous e-ink Kindle. I also know know if it goes to sleep while it has an USB data connection.

It stays awake, and charging, all the time that USBnetworking is in use and the USB cable is connected.
The kernel has set a "Wake Lock" in that situation.

But the PC may turn off the power to its USB ports when it goes to sleep.

Thanks. Every time someone posts about the great screen, I am tempted. But I suspect the Oasis 1 is still better for me than the Oasis 2

If you mean you are lying flat on your back with the device held directly above your face, so it's essentially horizontal, then I cannot advise. That seems a really uncomfortable way to hold anything while reading, ipad, physical book, whatever.

I do read in bed all the time, and I hold my Oasis one handed in my left hand, effectively pinched between my thumb on the front and first and second fingers on the rear. My little finger pops underneath to support. The device is held tipped back a bit from vertical. I held the Voyage the same way and my little finger doest get tired with to Oasis like it did with the Voyage.

I actually do like the design (I have an Oasis 1). My concern is the added weight of the Oasis 2. But if it "feels" lighter than the Voyage (which I also have), even while reading lying down, it might be worth it to me if the screen is better than what I have now ...

A couple more impressions. I've read a bit on my new Oasis now. It's considerably heavier than the old Oasis, the aluminium back is pretty slick and cold. It's not heavier than my Voyage (which I always read with the cover on), but it's less comfortable to hold. This actually surprised me, because the first Oasis feels super comfy in the hand. I think I'll have to improve the grip somehow, but I don't want to add any weight, so using a cover is out. Perhaps something like these? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Otherwise I like the new Oasis, despite the uneven screen. I can live with the gradient, my Voyage is blotchier. Exchanging it would be a real pain, given where I live.

As for battery, haven't noticed any abnormalities so far, but then I haven't used my Oasis much yet.

I received mine today. The screen is beautiful and I love the size. I don't mind the weight or the leather cover. I don't like the flash of the page refresh which is extremely noticeable. I first noticed it flipping through the library. It would flash after two pages sometimes, sometimes after one. I changed it to off and it did the same. I tried reading a book. One page, big long full to black and back to white flash. I have only 14 books on the device, so I didn't think that indexing would be causing it. I compared it to the Voyage, same book etc and totally different. Of course there is the refresh but so subtle you barely notice it, not so the new lovely Oasis! Any thought?

PS I just read some reviews about the page refresh and they say it is fast and smooth. Well, mine sure isn't. My 1200 books are still in the cloud, not on the device, but could it still be slowing it down? Ugh. I don't want to go through the return process!

Page refresh on the Oasis is perfectly smooth. Are you sure, you deactivated the page refresh on every page-turn in the menu? The number of books on your device or in the cloud should have no effect on page refreshing.

Interesting, have not heard anyone else comment on this. I assume that when you talk about the page flash that you are doing so in comparison to other Kindle readers you have used? Do you think that the simple fact that the screen is larger (more screen for you eyes to take in) increases your perception of the flash, or do you really think the flash is technically more pronounced that on the other readers?

I see the same thing you do when I'm in settings, and while opening and closing a book, but not while actually reading the book.

It seems to be quite clever when reading a book - you only get a refresh black flash when you start a new chapter. When paging through the library it flashes once every five page turns, but that's no big deal.

Thanks for the responses. I was reading last evening in a low light room, and maybe because of the larger screen, I was more aware of it. What surprised me at the time was the randomness of it and it was the same whether it was refresh was on or off in the options. It might have been processing my 14 books or the library. This morning I tried it with the refresh on and off. Yes, like Harry said it refreshes at the beginning of the chapter. Mine for some reason does the refresh on the 1st two pages and then doesn't until end of the chapter. While paging through the library it does the refresh every 5 pages with a slight pause. I have made videos of the Voyage and the Oasis 2 on my iphone. I must say clear difference in screens (Oasis very good), but not much in the refresh. So I don't know why it was so very bothersome last evening. I have been reading on a tablet most of the time recently, and that also may have influenced my perception. I wanted to go back to the kindle again for a number of reasons, and maybe I just need to get acclimated to it again.

I had created a separate thread but this is how my new Oasis behaves as well. About 200 pages over 4 days and then it requires a recharge. Second charge was also about 200 pages over 4 days.

For the third charge I have disabled wifi, I have read about 230 pages and I am on day 3 with 21% battery. Screen has been between 9-12 the whole time. So wifi off makes a difference but I don't think I am anywhere near the advertised battery life.

For comparison my reading habits were the same during my Voyage years and I had to charge the battery about once a every 3-4 weeks not days.
