The Lancet: Zoonoses: Global Health Series

Zoonoses - pathogenic organisms such as bacteria or viruses which we share with animals - cause more than 60% of human infectious diseases, and have been responsible for some of the most devastating disease outbreaks in recent years, including HIV, Ebola, and SARS. However, despite their huge, and rising, impact on human health, there are still huge gaps in our understanding of how zoonoses spread and develop, which need to be urgently addressed if we are to be able to reduce the impact of the next zoonotic pandemic.

In a new Lancet Series, leading experts discuss the ecology, drivers and dynamics of zoonoses

The Definitive One-Volume History of the Korean War--Yours for Only $3.99 Right Now.

"The Forgotten War." Tragically, IMHO. Perhaps this book will help change that.

This Kind of War: The Classic Military History of the Korean War. By T.R. Fehrenbach. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 298 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $26.95; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $3.99. Open Road Media, publisher. 540 pages. http://www.amazon.com/This-Kind-War-...the+Korean+War.

Book Description
This Kind of War is the most comprehensive single-volume history of the Korean-American conflict that began in 1950 and is still affecting United States foreign policy. Fifty years later, not only does this enlightening account give details of the tactics, infantrymen, and equipment, it also chronicles the story of military and political unpreparedness that led to a profligate loss of American lives in Korea.

T. R. Fehrenbach, an officer in the conflict, provides us with accounts of the combat situation that could only have been written by an eyewitness in the thick of the action. But what truly sets this book apart from other military memoirs is the piercing analysis of the global political maneuverings behind the brutal ground warfare that marked this bloody period of history, one that has been all but forgotten.

Hailed as “a must for all soldiers and former soldiers” by an Amazon.com reviewer,
This Kind of War restores the Korean War to its rightful place in American history—as a touchstone for US foreign engagement and a lesson for politicians ready to shed American blood on faraway soil.

If the publishers don't want the war to be forgotten, they might want to remember that it wasn't a Korean-American conflict. Many nations sent their young to die in Korea, not just the US.

I, for one, know that it was an United Nations vs North Korea/China conflict, and I respect the U.K.'s, as well as the other countries', participation on the side of the United Nations.

Largely because of its military size and economic strength, the U.S. usually steals the spotlight from other participants in a coalition. I remember that being true in the first Gulf war, the second Gulf War, and the campaign in Afghanistan. Recently, I was reminded, in something that I read, that the U.S. was not the only country fighting the war in the Pacific in World War II. It was an allied effort. Sometimes it seems that the U.S. was the only one, based on what we read and see. But, Great Britain was in it, Australia was in it, the free Dutch were in it, and several others.

Thanks for your reminder.

Don't forget that the only reason the United Nations was able to participate in the war was because the Soviet Union was boycotting to protest the Republic of China, not the People's Republic of China, holding a permanent seat on the Security Council. The Soviet Union held veto power and could have prevented the UN from participating in the war.

Publishers engage in target marketing, just like other kinds of companies. Probably this book is target marketed toward Americans, hence the description calls it a Korean-American conflict. If it was target marketed to the U.K., I (a citizen of the U.S.) wouldn't be offended if the book description said that it was a Korean-U.K. conflict.

Just sharing a different view, not trying to be argumentative. Having an academic background in marketing and having worked in that field much of my career, I can "see" the publisher's perspective.

I appreciate your father's service in that war. Some people in the U.S., at least, think that the Korean War was pointless--after all of the carnage, expense, etc., the borders of the North and South ended up about where they were when the War started. However, I look at it this way: had the United Nations not fought it, what is now South Korea would probably be just like North Korea is today. Instead, there is a country, South Korea, where the people enjoy freedom and experience tremendous economic prosperity. And the products that they produce bless much of the world.

Fair point. For me, though, such a factual inaccuracy in the description makes me distrust the whole book, and so stops me buying it, when I probably would have otherwise.

None of that disproves your point, of course. It's entirely possible that I'm in the minority, and the description helps it sell more overall.

If I ever knew that, I have forgotten it.

Wow. Things certainly might have been very different had the Soviet Union used their veto power. It's interesting, and kind of scary, to contemplate some of the different scenarios that might have played out.

BIG, Highly-Rated Book about England's Tudor Family--At a Nice 86% Markdown.

Tudor: Passion. Manipulation. Murder. The Story of England's Most Notorious Royal Family. By Leanda de Lisle. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 78 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $19.99; digital list price $13.99; Kindle price now $1.99. PublicAffairs, publisher. 578 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Tudor-Passion-...s+Royal+Family.

Book Description
The Tudors are England’s most notorious royal family. But, as Leanda de Lisle’s gripping new history reveals, they are a family still more extraordinary than the one we thought we knew.

The Tudor canon typically starts with the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, before speeding on to Henry VIII and the Reformation. But this leaves out the family’s obscure Welsh origins, the ordinary man known as Owen Tudor who would fall (literally) into a Queen’s lap—and later her bed. It passes by the courage of Margaret Beaufort, the pregnant thirteen-year-old girl who would help found the Tudor dynasty, and the childhood and painful exile of her son, the future Henry VII. It ignores the fact that the Tudors were shaped by their past—those parts they wished to remember and those they wished to forget.

By creating a full family portrait set against the background of this past, de Lisle enables us to see the Tudor dynasty in its own terms, and presents new perspectives and revelations on key figures and events. De Lisle discovers a family dominated by remarkable women doing everything possible to secure its future; shows why the princes in the Tower had to vanish; and reexamines the bloodiness of Mary’s reign, Elizabeth’s fraught relationships with her cousins, and the true significance of previously overlooked figures. Throughout the Tudor story, Leanda de Lisle emphasizes the supreme importance of achieving peace and stability in a violent and uncertain world, and of protecting and securing the bloodline.

Tudor is bristling with religious and political intrigue but at heart is a thrilling story of one family’s determined and flamboyant ambition.

Book Description
A captivating encyclopedia on using herbs for well-being and all aspects of daily life

It turns out that Mother Nature is a brilliant chemist. Our ancestors have used indigenous herbs in daily life for thousands of years due to these plants’ ability to heal and promote good health. Now modern science has identified the compounds that give herbs their medicinal qualities, scent, and flavor. The extraordinary diversity of herbal plants has the potential to improve our health and well-being, and we are wholeheartedly incorporating herbs, both fresh and dried, into our lifestyles—for well-being, healing, gardening, beauty, ceremony, and a richer, fuller life.

Presented in three parts,
Rodale’s 21st-Century Herbal first explores the historical relationship between people and herbal plants and how it has evolved over time. In the second part, readers will delve into an A-to-Z encyclopedia of 180 of the most useful herbs from around the globe, not only familiar herbs like bilberry and nasturtium, but also cutting-edge herbs from other cultures, like red bush tea and maca, that are now available in the West. The final section highlights how herbs create a “fuller” life and features herbal cooking techniques, ways to use herbs for beauty and the bath, ideas for daily herbal use (such as green cleaning, fragrances, decor, smudging, and dyeing), gardening and growing how-tos (with illustrated garden designs), and advice for holistic herbal pet care.

That is the best teaser I have seen in quite a while. Almost worth the $2 for having read the description alone.

I rarely even get to read the "teaser" for a book. It's usually just a hurried cut-and-paste for me, so that I can get book's information posted. haha

Memoir/Self-Help Book on Setting Priorities and Stuff, by Candace Bure--99 Cents!

I haven't even perused the book, so I don't know one way or the other; but the book is published by a religious publisher (B&H), so there might be some religious overtones, references, etc. in the book.

Book Description
“How do you do it all?”

That’s the question that wife, mom, actress, and best-selling author Candace Cameron Bure is often asked. And it’s a question that women everywhere are asking themselves as we seek to balance all of our roles, responsibilities, and opportunities.

So, how do we do it? Working since the age of 5, Candace has been in a balancing act for nearly her entire life. She is the first to tell you that there is no miracle formula for perfect execution in every area of your life, but there definitely are some lessons to be learned, lessons that come to life in Candace's story.

Come along and dig into Candace’s story from her start in commercials, the balance-necessitating years on Full House, to adding on the roles of wife and mom while also returning to Hollywood. Insightful, funny, and poignant, Candace’s story will help you balance it all.
