Have you tried any of their books? I got the impression from their website that they troll the internet for content, roll it into a book (programmatically?) and then use an editor/photographer (or maybe steal/license that content, too?) to publish their very large catalog.

I haven't purchased any of their books, though, to be able to comment on the quality of what is there (recipe- or formatting-wise).

No, I haven't tried any of their books.

I did purchase this book for myself, though. But I haven't had a chance to look through it.

Is this similar to what Encore does? Speaking of which, I haven't seen any of their books marked down in quite some time. They quit about the time that we had all of the discussion about them 5 or 6 months ago, coincidentally(?).

"Steal" . . . . I wouldn't necessarily go that far. I don't think that every cookbook has to have all original recipes (about the only ones that I know who do that are Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen)? I think that it's fine if cookbooks take recipes from the recipe books of others, but they should give credit when they do. My main issue, I think, with Encore and Callistomedia is that they don't do it, apparently. And that seems way too much like plagiarism.

It's interesting to me that Callistomedia openly shares what its tactics are.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep a wary eye out for more of Callistomedia's books.

I think Encore does that manually (and has been caught at it). I don't know how Rockridge does theirs. They may "find" popular content, the format it into a book and get permission from the site owners to use it.

The actual recipes (the list of ingredients and most names, unless they contain trademarks) cannot be copyrighted. So, they are fair game for anyone. Any commentary, including the instructions for making the dish, plus any photos, though, are automatically covered by copyright. So, they would need to license the content.

Their books do look great, though, from just glancing at the covers. It just seems inauspicious that there are no lists of authors, ways to submit, listings of books - just a "we do it all via a huge vacuum scoop and data mining" motto, along with their various "imprints".
