For those that want different margins in column mode, the solutions proposed aren't good enough. I think there must be some special options for that: inter-column margin and draw a vertical line as separator or not, because if you specify a little space is very common to jump over the columns when reading and a line between them solves the issue.

But I want to do a proposal to Buggins. Due new tablets of 7", 9" and 10" screen size, even two columns makes a lot wide text for a comfortable reading. More uncomfortable if you read in "skimming" mode (that's the reason normal columns in newspapers are shorter than opinion ones). However, the most ergonomic stuff comes with eye movement and strain. We read in eye jumps, more wide text, more eye jump on each line. A professional reader (read: hardcore) is capable to read a book with no more than two eye hits per line (and only one in a newspaper column). Then my proposal is have the ability to have as many columns as user will want, separated for portrait and landscape modes. That is, a user could have two columns for portrait and three or four for landscape.

This is an ergonomic stuff: normally user needs to move the hand to advance page. If you put wide margins, you will have one short column, but you need to move the hand (and perhaps the hand that is not holding the device) to advance page more frequently than if you have more text in screen, but reading with wide lines is very difficult and slow than read with shorter ones. Now translate this o a new 27" desktop screen or a 13" laptop (or the new Windows 8 tablets).

CoolReader is the best reading app for Android as it was for linux devices. Better than FBreader and other paying programs...

On my PE: Open FIle, keeping going back (sometimes you have to scoll down to see the Back Arrow); eventually you get to what I guess is root listing Recent Books, SDCard, /intsdcard , /mnt/extsdcard/ online catalogs, find (search) book, books by author and /sdcard. This is on my Pocket eDGe.

Actually on the Thrive it's the same only less listings in the final page, but SDcard and /mnt/sdcard2. I think you're just not gong back far enough, being tricky becuase the Back Arrow is (on my devices) never at the top of the listings.

I have a question that I am sure has been answered somewhere in this long thread (which I keep intending to go back and re-read but...well, it's so long). Is there a setting that will open the reader in this root position? I have never been able to find an option in all the difference versions. I hate sometimes when there's something short I want to read and it opens a book!

I am also following closely the discussion on two page reader. I use it most of the time, even on my smaller device. Always been puzzled that none of the other readers have this option. It was the option that prompted a donation sometime back. Guess I'm due another donation...Thank you, Buggins.

Now it no longer reads our books from the SD card where we had been storing them. It seems that Google has added official support for SD cards in Android tablets where previously they were hacked in by vendors such as Toshiba. In doing so, it has changed the way the sd cards are mounted in the OS. Previously the internal storage was called "/mnt/storage" and the SD Card was "/mnt/sdcard" now, the internal storage is called "/mnt/sdcard" (because it's an internal sd card) and the external SD Card is "/mnt/sdcard2".

Coolreader only shows what's on the internal memory and won't let us access the external SD Card. Is there any possible way to fix that with a software update? I have tracked down this potentially helpful information that may get you in the right direction.

Thank you again for such a wonderful program, and for taking such an active participation with your users!

-edit- We're running CoolReader 3.0.54-33 from the Android Market.

Can someone tell me if there is an setting causing CoolReader to always open in what I call the root or file tree page? i.e., the listing of Recent Books, sdCard, sdCard2, Online catalogs, etc.

Is there a way for the user to delete some of the stock Background Textures?

@CharlieBird, I've been to that "root" menu where it lists online libraries and recent books, but the only SD Card option is the one that is linked to the internal storage.

@Buggins, 3.0.54-34 works flawlessly! Thank you! Expect at least another couple donations from the both of us very soon.

Question? Does Coolreader3 support pagebreaks the reason I ask is the chapters are showing up all over the place instead of the top of the page. I just started using it today and really dont know much about this software.

Yes.
What format are you reading?
If your book has a built in CSS, do you have CR3 set to use the built in CSS or do you have it disabled in your settings defaults? In either case, if the style sheet in use calls for headings to start on a new page, that is where they will start.

Epub. No built in CSS. I noticed that it did it on my sons kindle fire as well with a different epub. Thought it was just a fluke. Then noticed it doing it on mine. Wonder if I installed an older version or something (thought I had gotten the latest version). *Edit: Running version 3.0.45-07

Its strange this is a epub that I rebuilt with Sigil. Its properly formatted with a TOC and individual html sections per chapter etc. Neither enabling or disabling the document structure has any effect. Its rather bizarre because the epub headers/chapters show up properly with the Nook built-in reader and on my PB360 using FBReader180. Just not on Coolreader for some reason.

Ok so now I have another question. How do I make my covers go back to their normal size. They are tiny now. I messed with the image settings in options but there is no effect.

Two things:

I am using Cool Reader on a rooted Sony T1.

1. Is odt support planned in future releases? I exchange documents with a lot of people who use open office and it would be nice to be able to open that format directly.

2. Sometimes when I click on a book (e.g. rtf-file) the file opens in landscape mode although I didn't set that option.

Update 3.0.54-38

Fixed problem with EPUBs with encrypted embedded fonts with unencripted other content: now they are considered as non-DRMed.
Fixed problem with line alignment after <br>

Still looking for this answer to the question above.

Also I am wondering I have a book where the TOC is blank but it shows up in other readers. The TOC was created exactly as the rest of the series so it is baffling me why its blank. Any ideas.

Great program btw.

an interesting comparison: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...0&postcount=37
the first is what would normally appear, the second one is displayed by coolreader.
