Cool Jim Butcher quotes...

The people at both of the Burger Kings near my house know who I am by sight and will say “Hey Jim, how’s it going?” and “How’s the next book coming along?” whenever I go there. That’s how often I’m at Burger King.

Cool What I'm reading while waiting for Peace Talk's release...

I'll for sure be reading more of these urban fantasy tales while waiting for Peace Talk's release... Yessir...I'm ready to start reading A Local Habitation (October Daye #2) by Seanan McGuire!!
I'm starting a new (to me) urban fantasy series (trilogy maybe?) called Spook Squad. The first book is called Memory Zero (Spook Squad #1) by Keri Arthur.

Quote:
For Sam Ryan, life began at age fourteen. She has no memory of her parents or her childhood. In a decade of service with the State Police, Sam has exhausted the resources of the force searching for clues to her identity. But all mention of her family seems to have been deliberately wiped off the record. Everything changes the night Sam’s missing partner resurfaces as a vampire . . . and forces her to kill him in self-defense. Now Sam is charged with murder. Suspended from the force, and with no one left to trust, Sam accepts some unexpected help from Gabriel Stern, a shapeshifter who conceals startling secrets.

While investigating the circumstances surrounding her partner’s strange behavior, Sam discovers that Garbriel’s been involved with a dangerous organization that’s planning a war on the human race. More immediate, someone is guarding the truth about Sam’s past—someone who’d rather see her dead than risk her knowing too much. To stay alive, Sam must unravel the threads of her past—and find out not only who she is but what she is.
I've shoved the other books I've recently started (except for the October Daye series) onto the back burner for a while.

Dammit, Alan. I don't have time for another one! I bought the first one in October Skye, but haven't had a chance to read one page.

Well thank you. I should quit my dayjob and become a shrink.

On second thought, nah. It is enough that I have a few nut-cases at work, don't need every client to be one as well.

I will resist temptation to check the series out, for now. Don't like to constantly rearange my reading orders.

You do realize that this is cruelty, you piling more books onto my TBR which is already nearing 200?

That would be a bad idea, I would never get to the end. I do not believe that I read as fast as recommendations pile in. Maybe I should start a list with "need to check out next time I want to find something new to read."

Oh, so your TBR is a goalpost?

My TBR is a list of things I am interested in, for perusal and selection when I need a new book.

Things get ranked depending on how interested I am, and if something is not interesting enough to ever make it to the top or receive special attention, then there is no actual harm in having it float around back there.

I will never get to the end of my TBR, and I don't wish to -- that would mean I ran out of books to read.

I sort of have 2 TBR lists - one of purchased books and one of non-purchased but interesting books. I have managed to keep the first very short and try to keep it that way but the second is very long and is treated the way you treat yours it sounds like.

I try to avoid buying books until I am actually ready to read them.

Freebies obviously don't count -- I can "buy" as many of them as I like (though I am not very good at finding them).

No, I definitely do not consider my list as goalpost. My tbr list is rather a very short list of books I already started reading, and want to finish. I probably have something similiar to what Alan got - book ADHD - if something appears to promise more interesting, I would drop the current book and get suckered in the next. I found it to be hard to get back into the abandoned book, especially if it is still in the boring "let's explain the world rules part." I will never run out of things to read - in a pinch I always have the next Dresden book for rereading, also would not mind to squeeze in Harry Potter reread sometime.

So my tbr list is really short in order to be able to put another book in in the not so far away future. I don't want to constantly reevaluate a priority of the books to read.

I am not "constantly re-evaluating" -- I simply have a list of books, and when they get added to, they are added at a specific position, and they stay there unless I have a compelling reason to go in and change it, and then I run down the list when I need a new book and choose something interesting which is probably near the top.

My TBR is basically just "a list of things I may end up reading", so I don't forget about them.

The books I absolutely feel I must read NOW are a different list -- "the ones I am currently in the middle of reading".
