Bright, sunny, a bit breezy at the moment. Oh, I've heard that Nasa have issued a solar-storm warning - so when it gets dark, and provided the sky is clear, keep an eye out; there's a small but reasonable chance you could see the aurora borealis, even if you're not too far north.

I've seen the northern lights myself. Stunning!

I'm not sure, but I think I'm require by UNOTSH (United Nations Of The Southern Hemisphere) Guidelines to pipe up whenever I see any hemispherist bias going on. Shame on you, A_J_Lath. Shame...on...you.

How come there's never any mention of Southern Lights? Aren't there any? Or is it that there's no-one to see them?

Aurora Australis...also known as the Southern Lights, and, yes, they exist. I think mentioned much less often as there are fewer people to see them (only rarely glimpsed in the far south of Oz, for instance).

There used to be a passenger train run for many years between Sydney and Melbourne called The Southern Aurora. Just remembered that. I've always wanted to go on a long, first class train trip (Indian-Pacific, and The Ghan, for example). Not really relevant to anything though.

For some reason you got me searching for Terra Australis, and I found that Australia is named after it. Not that it's any more relevant than your train...

Pfft. I was being silly. It's one of the near-inevitabilities of internet conversation that a northern hemispherite will mention a season, and an antipodean will respond with, "It's [opposite season] here!". I was just playin' that predictable card; being "self-mocking".
