Being a Star Trek fan, you probably already know not to name it "Computer". Every time one of the crew members on a Star Trek TV show talks to the ship's A.I., it will wake the device. I never realized how frequently the word "computer" is used on TV programs across the board until I named one of my devices that. It seemed a cool idea at the time.

I got an Alexa notification today. I was bit surprised, since I had nothing on order and that's the only kind of notification I've ever gotten. I ask what it was and she said "Based on your history, I thought you'd like to know about <this new book> by <some author>. Would you like to know more?" I wanted to shoot her. I said, because I tend to get angry when she's intrusive like that, "No, and don't you ever do that again!" And to my surprise, she said something like "OK, you won't get any more notifications of this type." Only thing that would have been better* is if she said it with an appropriately apologetic and chastised tone of voice.

If I don't have any orders on the way, I've learned to delete all notifications without even listening to them. Saves me the trouble of getting mad about them.

But at least you're getting author/book related stuff! I don't get them very often, but when I do, they're almost always about whether it's time to reorder something I usually have no intention of ever reordering.

You mean a reason other than not knowing such a setting exists? No not really. I despise using that app, so I rarely visit it for changes. I can never remember how to get to the various settings. It's like a treasure hunt for the world's worst prize!

But now that you mention it, there's also an option to disable the kind of notifications that @ApK got annoyed about.

Regardless... saying "Delete all my notifications" (without listening to them) when I have no orders pending will always be my go-to method for avoiding hearing all unsolicited notifications. Even new ones I haven't yet learned I can disable.

Anyone know if Fire tablets still support an "Echo Show" mode? An old CNET article talks about a show mode charging dock for HD8 & HD10 but it looks like that is no longer available?

The current feature grid down on this page says the 8" and 10" versions still have Show Mode:

I have a Fire HD 10, and there is a slider when I swipe down from the top that says "Show Mode". When I slide it, it says "To use Show Mode, you must enable Alexa in Settings". So I assume Echo Show Mode is available.

I have a 9th generation.
