I've got a new laptop!

It's huge! In price, specs and size... Only drawback: it has Windows 7 on it...

In the winter when it is very cold at night there are moon halos, caused by the ice crystals (I think) very beautiful when seen where there is no light pollution.

Everything I've heard about Win 7 has been positive. Not at all like when Vista was first released.

Light pollution sucks. I've thought of taking a vacation in places where it's less of a problem than it is here.

True: moonbows can only be seen where there's no light pollution...

We do live in an area with low light pollution. I don't think there's a single location in Europe where there's no light pollution, or you must go all the way up north in Scandinavia...

Too much "I know what you want, trust me" from Microsoft to my taste...

You are right! That's because colour impaired people can't see colour like you did and that's why I called it a halo.(I'm not being uncool here or uptight, just explaining)

But here's the best bit. Years later they invented glasses that let you see colours that coloured impaired people have never seen before.

So you saw a moon bow. How cool, and it must have been much prettier than the HALO I saw. I actually enjoy seeing coca cola cans, tomatoes and Virgin Airline colours for the first time because I've never seen those colours before.

Can you imagine seeing a colour you have never seen before?

Jasper National Park in Alberta was recently named a Dark Sky Preserve. If you want dark nights full of stars thats the place to go. I lived there for a couple of years, darkest nights I can remember.

Any. But the moon must be bright enough (so, only full and near full moons) and, like normal rainbows, you need rain... (opposite the moon...)

That would be stunning with the Northern lights as well, beautiful. I haven't seen the stars in so long, I hate living in a big city sometimes.

I have the Razorback Mountain Range between here and Sydney (30 miles). With winter coming up I just wish I had my young eyesight because the light pollution isn't bad. I still remember the first time I wondered why the aircraft had such a strange double light configuration ten years ago as it flew over Sydney. Time to get new glasses again.

Thanks for that. I recall from doing an Internet search on it a few years ago that there are a couple of places in the US as well that are recommended for folks who would like to see the stars, but I couldn't name them without doing the search again.

Back in '64 my family went on the (US) Grand Tour. We stopped at the North Side of the Grand Canyon and they didn't have any lights in the campground. Making the final outhouse run with flashlights, somebody stopped and looked up - and everybody behind bumped into them! It was gorgeous! Never saw so many stars - and the Milky Way - wow.

But they probably have lights up now
