Thanks. This is a reminder for me that there are still a few books toward the end of that series that I haven't read.
This is a good series for anyone who likes some humor with their mysteries.

Last Summer by Evan Hunter (aka: Ed McBain) is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Three teenagers turn an idyllic summer vacation into a violent nightmare in this “compelling and unforgettable” novel by the bestselling author of The Blackboard Jungle (Harper’s).

Bored, restless, privileged teenagers Sandy, David, and Peter meet while vacationing with their families on remote Greensward Island. The two boys, both sixteen, are immediately entranced by Sandy’s beauty and frank sexuality.

Over the course of the summer, the trio creates an illicit teenage paradise far removed from adult supervision. Stolen beers and lustful teasing lead to more nefarious games, however, when Rhoda appears. Shy, quiet, and unsophisticated, the fifteen-year-old desperately wants to fit in with her more glamorous peers. Her awkwardness brings out a vicious cruel streak in Sandy, who has David and Peter so tightly wrapped around her finger they’ll do whatever she wants—even if it means destroying an innocent life.

A fearless, unflinching portrait of youth gone wild, Last Summer was the basis for an Academy Award–nominated film starring Barbara Hershey, Bruce Davison, Richard Thomas, and Catherine Burns. Originally published in 1968 and heralded by Cosmopolitan as “the most chilling novel of this—or any—autumn,” Last Summer transforms a coming-of-age story into a dark and twisted fable and confirms Evan Hunter’s reputation as a master of suspense.

I've read and enjoyed several titles in Cora Harrison's Burren series, but haven't read any of her Reverend Mother Aquinas titles. Now the second title in the series, A Shocking Assassination, has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US. I wish it were the first on sale , but it's sitting at more than $7 right now...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ITS6GNO

Quote:
“Well-drawn characters, including a lead capable of sustaining a long series, complement the clever plot”
Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Reverend Mother Aquinas is asked to prove a young man’s innocence in the second of this atmospheric new Irish historical mystery series.

Ireland. 1924. Reverend Mother Aquinas is buying buttered eggs in the Cork city market at the very moment when the city engineer, James Doyle, is assassinated. Although no one saw the actual killing, a young reporter named Sam O’Mahoney is found standing close to the body, a pistol in his hand, and is arrested and charged.

Following a desperate appeal from Sam’s mother, convinced of her son’s innocence, the Reverend Mother investigates – and, in this turbulent, war-torn city, uncovers several other key suspects. Could there be a Republican connection? Was James Doyle’s death linked to his corrupt practices in the rebuilding of the city, burned down more than a year ago by the Black and Tans? Cork is a city divided by wealth and by politics: this murder seems to have links to both.

Aunt Dimity and the Duke is the second in Nancy Atherton's Aunt Dimity series. I read quite a few of the early titles in this series back in DTB days, and enjoyed them, but at some point, I sort of lost touch with the series. I guess it was a little bit of transitioning to e-books, and titles in this series don't go on sale often. And also a little bit of series-ennui as the titles kept coming. But in any case, this is the second in the series, and one of the ones I liked! It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Quote:
The beloved Aunt Dimity returns in this delightful follow-up to the book that launched the Aunt Dimity series. Watch out for Nancy Atherton's latest, Aunt Dimity and the King's Ransom, coming in July 2018 from Viking!

Emma Porter is forty, fat, frumpy, and a passionate amateur gardener. When her longtime lover dumps her for a younger woman, Emma escapes the cloying sympathy of family and friends by setting out on a summer-long driving tour of England's glorious gardens. A Dimity-contrived coincidence brings her to Penford Hall, a sprawling Gothic mansion in Cornwall, where she finds a duke in search of a missing lantern with extraordinary powers. Suspecting there's more than one mystery to be solved at Penford Hall, Emma accepts the duke's invitation to stay on and restore the once glorious chapel garden to its former beauty. The dark rumors surrounding a rock star and the near-death of the duke's beautiful cousin confirm Emma's suspicions, and set her--with Aunt Dimity's ghostly guidance--on the path to Penford Hall's secrets and the pleasure of unexpected love.

Checking out the sample, the first line makes me ask: What are "buttered eggs"? Line: Reverend Mother Aquinas was buying buttered eggs in the English Market on the Friday morning ...

She's in an open market stall, not a restaurant. ??

I have/had no idea, but I would have assumed it was something Irish, like black pudding or colcannon. But when I googled it, once I got past all the recipes for scrambled eggs with lots of butter, I found this:

Quote:
Buttered eggs are a specialty in Cork, Ireland.

Absolutely freshly-laid eggs straight from the nest are rolled in melted butter. The melted butter forms a protective seal over the shell, extending the storage life of the eggs in the absence of refrigeration, or even if they are refrigerated. The butter also permeates through the shell and influences the flavour of the egg inside.

Buttered eggs is also the name of a dish; see buttered eggs (2).
link: https://www.cooksinfo.com/buttered-eggs-1

So now I really learned something!!!

Also, I think you may have quoted the wrong post - the one you quoted was Aunt Dimity , and the Mother Aquinas one immediately preceding Aunt D is the one with the buttered eggs...

The Woods by Harlan Coben is currently .99 on Amazon. I'm reading it at present and finding it interesting to say the least.

The thing is, I would think the butter would go rancid and ruin the eggs. But I guess not...

It's been a couple years since this was last free, but it's free again right now. And the whole series is still KU if you like it...

Link below is still good.

The other titles in the series are KU, so if you have KU, you can read in order if you prefer.

Not sure about Skyhorse Publishing, and don't have time right now to research, but I have read the Black Stiletto series by this author and liked it a lot. Still, if you are very sensitive to possibly self-pubbed, skip the rest of this post.

Raymond Benson has two freebies right now, which look to be a little different than the Black Stiletto books, but since I like the author, and they're free, I'm going to snag them. But they may not end up very high on my TBR list . Somewhat unusually for many Kindle US freebies, they are not also free at Kindle UK, where they are £11.99 each - ouch!

In the Hush of the Night: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073XV221P

The Secrets on Chicory Lane: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZXZ6SS3

Also, BTW, a 5-book omnibus of Benson's Black Stiletto series is on sale right now for $1.99 at Kindle US, and an even better £0.76 at Kindle UK.
