I too was very impressed with the first book's beginning. I finally gave it 3/5, but maybe it'll be more of a success with you.

Just finished the first book in the series. I enjoyed it but it was definitely one to file under the "guilty reads" list. Sometimes your brain just needs a burger and fries. I cringed when Harry compared his situation to being a quarterback and being down with a minute to go. Yikes. Still, I will continue to read.

Just remember that after failing to impress his writing teacher with attempts at "high fantasy", Butcher decided to try going the other way and the teacher loved it.

Book 2 and later are much better than the first, though Harry remains as snarky, deprecating, irreverent and hatless as ever.
