I didn't mind the Kindle DRM once I could be sure that I could remove it ;-).

I got burned on the last Amazon Ebook format - I am still locked out of a library of PDFs that I bought, which Amazon and Adobe abandoned support for. After having been burned by that and being out cash for the books (some which I had to repurchase) I decided that I would never buy a DRM book unless I could remove the DRM. I'm not a pirate, I just want the same ownership privileges for my ebooks that I have with my dead tree versions.

Same here, I only purchase ebooks that can be liberated. I too lost a handful of PDFs when Amazon stopped supporting them. More recently, I have over two dozen titles that are unavailable on my Fictionwise bookshelf because Overdrive no longer sells through them. Fortunately, they were all liberated so as long as I keep a copy I have the books.

Seems like there's almost a case that could be build based on publishers no longer supporting formats/types that could serve to help rid us of the evil drm....

DRM is of no consequence to people who pirate as they will have no need to encounter it. It will turn otherwise honest people into pirates though once they get sufficiently annoyed with the limitations that it places on them.
Though I'm not sure I agree with your terminology here (my definition of "pirate" is probably different), I believe you do have a good point. I'm not saying this makes it ethically "right" or "moral" to get fed up and resort to "illegal" or "immoral" means to get what you want, but it certainly does make the behavior understandable.

I didn't want to start yet another copyright thread (YACT?) so I'll post this here.

There was a good CANWEST post on technology and copyright in 2009.

http://www.kelowna.com/2009/12/31/ho...led-copyright/

Quote:
Copyright infringement has stirred the souls of artists and publishers since the time of Charles Dickens, who went to the United States in 1842 to ask the Americans to stop pirating his works.

His books were being reprinted there without his receiving a penny, but the Americans told him to jump in the lake.

How the world has changed.

Now America's a bastion for the defence of copyright and the country that once rejected international copyright laws is relentless in enforcing them.

However, 2009 might have marked the year when the enforcers lost valuable ground.

They're having quite a bit of success, they've just stopped suing people directly and are offloading the cost via legislation. Also, ACTA.

I agree. I believe they have just changed strategy. They believe they are being clever by playing puppet master and getting laws written internationally via trade agreements. They think they won't have to play the bad guy by suing customers directly and they dump the costs on the tax payers.

They won't be successful in the long run but there is a lot more pain coming short term.

Notice to any publisher who reads this. These debates don't mean a thing. The fact is like it or not is every single ebook you have sold You sold it because people want to support your work. Everything you go to make your work harder for honest people to get makes it that much easier to get pirated copies. You've tried holding back the electronic copy you've tried not releasing the electronic copy you've tried releasing it so we can only read it how and when you want us to. It doesn't work every single paper book that was sold last year there is an electronic copy easly found on the web.
I buy a hardback book because I wand to read the authors work as soon as it comes out not because i think it looks better. The people who spend 250.00 on a reader are the people who like to read duh. I want the people who write my books survive so they keep writing. Everytime you make it harder you loose sales. Instead of making it harder for me to give you money you should be making it easier. I don't think many of the people that wouldn't pay for a book would spend the money to buy a reader.Try thinking about the people that buy your books. because like it or not we do have options.
