Ha. This is quite funny! A locale of en_GB was one of the many tweaks I had in place before the factory reset. So for the test I left it unchanged at en_US.

Ha nice coincidence But so it's definitely not part of the bug. I also realised I hadn't updated to the latest firmware after factory resetting and before testing, so my tests are useless, haha.

I looked at the DateLastRead column in the database. It looks consistent with the open-actions I took. No obvious problems there.

I just found an advantage of the capacitive screen: I dropped a crispy M&M on the screen and it rolled all over the place... but nothing happened!

Thank you! Good to see my assumption about cloning the card was correct.

Did you repartition to multiple partitions? A FAT32 SDHC (I assume the Clara is still limited to FAT32 format) card maxes at 32GB, whereas larger capacity cards use exFAT.

[My question might be moot, since I will probably not use more than a 32GB card]

That 32GB is a Windows formatting restriction. I think the actual file system limit is 2TB or something. Besides, Windows only acknowledges the primary or active partition anyway which by default, it cannot read (ext3 or something?).

Ah! I was confused by that picture, too. So, just to be sure I understand: the Kobo Clara HD does have a standard MicroSD slot on the motherboard, accessible by prying off the back of the unit, and the unit comes with an 8 GB MicroSD card in that slot, but the knowledgeable user can remove that 8 GB MicroSD card simply by pulling it out (no desoldering required) and clone its contents to a higher capacity MicroSD card, up to 32 GB in size, put the new, larger-capcity card back in the unit, and have increased storage space for ebooks. Correct?

And a standard SanDisk 32 GB class 10 card such as this one would be an appropriate replacement?

Thank you!

Higher than 32GB, I expect. I use a 64GB Samsung UHS-I uSD card on my Glo HD and I remember seeing a poster who tested up to 128GB, I think? I expect the only reason 256GB hasn't been tested yet is due to availability/cost prohibitiveness.

Currently have around 40GB worth of manga (cbz) on my Glo HD. Note, these devices have relatively weak processors so I still wouldn't load tens of thousands of ebooks on them.

Edit: Found the post.

All of them are Sandisk microSDs Class10, and yes, it works fine with all of them.

As it was already said, I had to reformat from exFAT to FAT32 the 64GB and 128GB with an external tool, but once done no issue for me.
Addendum: Also, just as a warning, fake SD cards are fairly common. Make sure you're buying either directly from Amazon or from an authorized retailer (not just an Amazon marketplace seller).

You might also need to check the __SyncDate column (think that's the name). Somewhere along the way, the Recent sorting seems to have changed to use the maximum of DateLastRead and __SyncDate rather than only using __SyncDate if the DateLastRead was null. I don't think this will have an affect on what you are seeing, but it is something to check.

No, I don't have any details. It was mentioned on the beta list that a different version would be out for the Clara HD, but there were no details. I assume it would just be any last minute fixes for the device, but it looks like some other changes snuck in. I'll probably try this on one of my devices over the weekend.

Ok. I uploaded the zip of the firmware. It's in one of my previous posts. You'll need to use it as there is no download link for it, and Kobo desktop does something funny to get it (I explained in more detail earlier).

I'd agree with you if these things were consistent but they aren't. One book will let me change the spacing and the weight. The next book won't. Or it'll let me change one and not the other. And sometimes other features don't work. I've never been able to spot a pattern of any sort related to font, etc.

I convert these books from Amazon format using Calibre and I always use the same settings. I've experimented with those settings to see if I can find a way to make the features always work. Nothing helps.

My conclusion is that these are bugs. I'm a retired programmer with 35 years experience and I've written enough bugs into programs to consider myself an authority on bugs.

That said, it's still a very nice device. There's more than enough right about Kobos to make up for the bugs.

My phone, laptop and tablet are all capacitive and I just resign myself to having to hit multiple times, but I really don't use the laptop and tablet all that often to begin with so it doesn't bother me. Keeping hand lotion on helps, or at worse just slightly licking my finger. Something I definitely don't want to do after touching an elevator button though. And I don't use those devices repeatedly like turning pages while reading. Only my phone would get answered outdoors in the cold and I don't have a problem with taking off my glove momentarily to answer a call or use the GPS. I'm not a big phone user so that's not really a problem for me.
