just to show you how little the creators decisions can matter when "it's already out ":
Kafka requested in hist last will, that his works shall not be published at all - unfortunately it was ignored...

Yes, 3D printers are already amazing. And the "looks like the original" part is relatively easy.

As I quoted before in post#91:
Quote:
(2)Copying in relation to a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work means reproducing the work in any material form.

This includes storing the work in any medium by electronic means.

(3)In relation to an artistic work copying includes the making of a copy in three dimensions of a two-dimensional work and the making of a copy in two dimensions of a three-dimensional work.

Well, not bronze yet, but stainless steel with a bronze finish is already available.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find 3D printers printing with bronze in the next decade.

Oh - and how about 3D printing in sterling silver?

Last time I saw "The Kiss" in real life I wasn't allowed to touch it either. The experience was looking at it, just the same as viewing it virtually.

Nor was I allowed to approach the Mona Lisa or Michelangelo's David.

I see the point you're trying to make, but using sculpture as a get around doesn't tick all the boxes.

However:

Quote:
In Spring 2003, artist Cornelia Parker intervened in The Kiss with the permission of the Tate Britain gallery, where it was exhibited at the time, by wrapping the sculpture in a mile of string. This was a historical reference to Marcel Duchamp's use of the same length of string to create a web inside a gallery in 1942. Although the intervention had been endorsed by the gallery, many viewers of the sculpture felt it offensive to the original artwork, prompting a further, unauthorised, intervention, in which Parker's string was cut by Stuckist Piers Butler, while couples stood around engaging in live kissing.
Where does that fit in to a 'use directed by artist' model?

Boo! I used to make sterling silver jewellry as a hobby. Most of the fun is in the making, and that just takes it all away. (The rest of the fun is giving someone a one-of-a-kind piece). Besides, they print in wax, make a mould, then cast in sterling so it's not really 3D printing in silver.

If people are interested in making jewellry and want to try it out, I point them to Metal Clay, which can be done with only a small investment, rather than spending alot in silversmithing tools. Then, if you like it, you can blow all your dough (like I did).
