Anyone know why TPZ is not listed as a supported format for the Kindle Fire?

Amazon don't regard Topaz as a distinct format - it's simply a variant of their AZW format. It will certainly support it, given that it's running the Android Kindle app.

Hmm, I see. I looked back at some of the older device specs and you must be correct as they don't list it either.

I has hope there for a minute that they might be abandoning it.

Topaz is very good, when used properly. All the advantages of PDF as far as complex layouts go, plus reflow. The problems occur when publishers use Topaz as a quick-and-dirty way of getting an eBook version of a paper book, and it comes out looking like a photocopy done on an ancient copier. But that's the publisher's fault. Topaz can look very good indeed when it's done right.

I kind of like the new Kindles but... They aren't cool enough to make me want to upgrade. Aside from a touch screen, it doesn't really seem like much has changed? Maybe that's just my untrained tech eyes? I always thought the point of releasing bigger and better electronics was to draw in the customers you already had, and hopefully catch some new ones.

Yes-it's all just "Kindle format" to most users (beyond this message board, at least). Even if Amazon were to add ePub or any other format in the future, it would be considered "Kindle format", I'm sure.

I would have been tempted to get one and use it purely for new releases IF they had released it for something resembling the USA price. Now I won't bother.

The $79 U.S. model is the Kindle with Special Offers (ad-supported), not available in other parts of the world (yet, anyway). The UK model that you're looking at (with no ads) is $109 in the U.S.

It has a faster processor and refreshes are better.

The Pearl Screen is the best we got right now but the new Kindles do have better hardware.

I am a little puzzled by your reasoning. The version on sale in the UK is not the $79 "special offers" model since, as you know, the special offer Kindles are only sold in the US; it is the model without special offers which sells for $109.

Now, let's do a little maths:

$109, at the current exchange rate, is £69.67. Add 20% VAT and you get £83.60. I don't personally consider the UK price of £89 to be an outrageous mark-up on that. Is it justified to call them "bastards" for a £5.40 price mark-up?

No, it's 6% more, and that level of variation is simply down to exchange rate fluctuations. Amazon do fair price conversions.

As HarryT says, the UK and US prices are very similar, in terms of revenue to Amazon. You've forgotten to take VAT into account.

US $109 = £70.07
Add in 20% VAT, = £84.08

UK price: £89

Difference: £4.92, or under 6%.
