With fear of repeating myself, I made such a patch for ipdf firmware version 2.9. It throttles the CPU automatically, using 400Mhz for rendering/zoom etc, 200Mhz for scribbles and 100Mhz for idle. It's available at iRex forums. There's a pre-compiled ipdf for those that trust binary downloads from the Internet running as root on their computers. ;-)

Oh, and it was done in a day and a half, with 3 kids around - which is more like 3 hours of actual time. :-)

But now we've gotten a new ipdf... so a suitable task for a wanna-be-programmer is to apply rincewinds patch to the new source and recompile it, right? Anyone?

Hi,

the script works though there seems to be a problem when you use it to switch down to the lowest possible speed (33000). The speed is changed but the iliad does not return to the content-lister.
If you press the up/down-buttons or the pagebar your iliad should return to the content-lister.

You can see if the speed is changed if you enter a speed different to 33000 MHz into the comment-field of the script. After running the script the comment-field should read the actual frequency the iliad was set to.

For example: trying to switch to 500000 should result in 398000.

I will change the default-speed of the script to 100000 to avoid further confusion.

UPDATE:
I just found out that I changed the script already to make 200000 KHz the default value. Which version did you download? What did the comment-line say before you first ran the script?

UPDATE:
Stupif me.I read your message again. Yes, the speed changed. You can try to set the iliad to 200001 KHz for example.

hello,

thanks f your answer.

i tried it with the following frequencys:
33
200

33 000
200 000
200 001

33 000 000
200 000 000

i've done this, because i don't know which freqency unit it's been used; mhz, khz, hz.

please say with which firmware version the script works?

because my version is still 2.71.

bye

Hi mtas.
I installed the powersaving ipdf using your installer. Then I updated my iLiad to 1.9.1. I'm now wondering, which ipdf am i using, rincewinds, or iRex's? And if I choose the option to uninstall rincewind's, will I then have the new iRex version?

Thanks!

After the update you are using iRex's version. As far as I know there is no "tweaked" version for 1.9.1 yet (the reason that I personally has not upgraded my device).

In future installers I'll include a README file that'll inform people that a restore to original state is recommended before upgrading.

Since the lowest possible frequency in Hz is 33000 the script's comment should read 33000 after trying to set 33.

It's Hz in an absolute number without the unit.

2.9 and maybe 2.9.1. I don't know about 2.7.1. If the script's comment changes from 33 to 33000 after running, it works.

And - of course - you have to thave shell-access enabled.

Why do you (have to?) stay on 2.7.1 ?

So will all be OK if I now choose "Restore iRex ipdf", when I am already using it?
