Just a (very) wild stab in the dark, but...

Try recharging it via USB, from your PC instead of using the charger. Just to eliminate the possibility of a faulty charger.
(besides, charging via USB uses a lower charging current and is easier on the battery)

I get about 3500 - 4000 page turns per full charge, reading mostly Connect books, using only the internal memory. I counted as "page turns", each time I turned it on, and each menu page change.

I think that .rtf files drain more power than Connect books, at least when opening them for the first time in the Reader.

I wouldn't rely so much on counting how many pages you get per battery bar because for instance just this week, my Reader went from zero bars to two bars during the same session. And yesterday, while reading, it was still showing two bars.

Frog,

I had the exact same issue. Reading only about 50 pages or less would drop the battery by a bar, and would hit the low battery warning after around 200 pages off a full charge. I was reading only off the internal memory, and mostly books from Connect. I tried a bunch of things with the battery, doing a full power cycle, and the reset after the firmware update, but nothing changed it. I finally got fed up and took it in to Borders for an exchange. The new unit works MUCH better. I've page flipped for quite a while now and still have full bars.

Incidentally, one of the people I work with has noticed the same problem as well. We bought ours from the same store at about the same time, so I'm assuming there was just a bad batch of batteries. His is on the way back to Sony for diagnosis. I'll try to post any news he gets when I hear about it.

The firmware update seems to have messed up the battery meter big-time. Hopefully they'll fix it in the next update, but until then, the meter seems to be pretty useless.

i dont know that it is a firmware update problem, i am running the latest version of the firmware and have a roughly linear discharge of the battery, as i said before in previous posts 1200 per bar is about normal for me with a RTF file. Perhaps there are a batch of sub optimal batteries out there. I always charge via USB btw.

Sorry, I think you misunderstand me. I get good battery life, but for me the firmware upgrade has messed up the display of the battery state on the meter. The meter just sits then, never changing, and when I recharge it goes to a random reading until I do a soft reset, at which time it goes back to full.

So far I have read 270 pages, and the unit is still indicating 4 bars.
It might turn to 3 bars when I fire it up later today

lets see :/

I just read a 780 page book without recharging. I like a bigger font, thus the larger number of pages. The reader first went to three bars at page 530, and was back and forth for 10-20 pages. The reader went to two bars at 710. I usually read about 50-100 pages in sitting, so there are probably 10% more screen refreshes than pages read. One data point.

Harry,

Is the battery meter working worse after the update? I haven't updated my firmware yet, and if it's going to mess it up more, I'll wait for the next update.

There does seem to be some hinkiness with the battery meter dating from the firmware update, I'm not sure any of us is certain what exactly the deal is.

Yet there are some of us that have had no problems with the battery meter. It is strange that there is such varriance of experience in both battery life and battery meter representation from one product. Generally Sony keeps very close to specification in their builds -- even more so on the first release of a product. I could better understand this wide range of responses if we were talking about Readers that were built in 2001 vs. 2006, but not from Readers built so close together and all seemingly from the same plant. Most strange.

That's certainly what many of us have found, yes. It doesn't affect the actual battery "lifetime", just means that the battery meter is essentially "broken" by the update.

I am not happy to report that my Sony Reader's battery is still dying way too fast. Right now I have about 500 page turns with a single bar, while that's a smidge better than what I was getting, it's still unacceptable. If I got around 5,000 page turns, I probably wouldn't complain, but Sony says 7500 page turns! My reader dies almost 4x more than Sony says it should.

What should I do? I bought this the day Sony started offering it online.
