I gave away many of my belongings 12 years ago. Probably the most numerous things I owned were books. Walls full of shelves and boxes of them. Always took me a week to find one. Odd that until now, I didn't realize that I didn't miss them.

I am near 100% on lending and giving my books away. Of all the things I have I don't horde books. I would rather pick up another used copy every couple years if I want to re-read a book.

Of course I cannot remember the last time I bought non-reference book at retail and new. I can say it has been at minimum 20-years since my last new non-reference book purchase. Maybe that makes it easier for me to give them away or lend them? Then again growing my friends and I always shared books this way. I think at any given time I have at most a couple dozen novels lying around the house and even that bothers me since they are just one more thing needing dusting. Of course, over the past decade or so, with each new year ebooks have increasingly reduced that number.

Hardly ever lend books - like most in this thread I'm really fussy about how to treat them well, and it saves me a lot of bother simply not to lend them. On the other hand I give away books that I have no particular relationship with and are just cluttering up my shelves.

Could it have been "The Gay Sisters" by Stephen Longstreet?

Someone has written a book with the same title since.

This book was about a wealthy family who lost everything during WW1, and how they coped with changing fortunes afterwards.

Thanks for asking.

Cheers.

I'm probably somewhere between 1% and 5%. I would loan more books if I knew more avid readers.

I never lend books anymore, but I give them away. Most of my books end up in yard sales, though.

I am part of a sort of "reading club" where whenever one of us buys a book, he/she tells the others so that the others do not buy it and when the others want to read it, he/she lends it to the others in turns.
It helps in both spending less money and reading more, because I ended up reading lots of books that I didn't even know were out there in the wild just out of curiosity.

Ebooks changed our habits a little.

The non-fiction p-books that I have I keep. The fiction p-books that I have and read, normaly are used from charity shops or car boot sales, they go back to charity shops.

I voted for the over 25% option, but my figure would probably be much higher. I'm pretty easy going with all my belongings, really, and giving them away comes easily. I usually end up giving away the things I enjoy the most, provided I know the recipient wants/would enjoy it, and I do enjoy books!

Also, ever since living in dorm rooms for 3 years with some awful roomies, I've become quite averse to clutter, and keep an eye out for reasons to get rid of things. I've moved a lot in the last few years too, and I get rid of a lot of things then too, because there's not many things I love enough to lug up and down stairs a lot. Right now I have 2 sizeable boxes ready to be taken to the library and Goodwill. Haha.

That said, there are definitely some books I will always keep, or, you'll at least have to pry them from my cold, dead hands to get at them.
