I didn't consider the iPads cost when I posted as most eInks around that size aren't really much cheaper. But otherwise a good point. Cost wise I went with the smallest iPad model available. I still wish I had spent 100 more for the GPS thingy (it just seems like a great feature to play with).

If possible I would advise checking out the archos vs. an iPad in store, just to see how one operates the units.
I'm pretty satisfied with my iPad. I think one of its main advantages is that the OS and GUI were made for a touch device. I don't know how this is with the archos.
But I did put a remote app on my iPad to have remote access to my win7 machine, and win7, even if some icons are a bit bigger due to the in built touch functions still seems to be programmed around "mouse-and-cursor"-centric operation.

The new Sony offerings was enough to get me to cancel my K3 order. Kindle's proprietary platform and lack of a expandable memory was enough to make me reconsider.

But I am having a hard time deciding between the 650 or waiting for the 950. I wish there was more info out there about the 950. I suppose with the wifi/3g only allows connection to the Sony store? I'm really not sure I need that as I buy my ebooks from different sources (thank you Inkmesh). So is the only other advantage the extra 1"? I don't know if that alone is worth the extra money or extra wait time.

No need to check the archos in the store, it runs the vastly inferior android, has much worse battery life, no ips lcd screen etc. etc.

I've read that with the wi-fi on the 950 you can use an internet browser, so that you can connect to other sites as well.

Just out of curiosity, does anybody know whether you will be able to annotate a PDF on the 950 (or on any of the models, actually) in zoom mode?

Plus, sooner rather than later the ... will hit the fan when oracle (current owner of sun) sues them for all the patents they've stolen off sun via java. (see here: http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2010/0...s-all-at-once/ )

Glad I could educate you on this.

Does anyone know if the wi-fi will enable me to grab books from my PC to the Reader without having to plug in the USB? That would be awesome.

No, but you can use it to download any books that you have already purchased from Sony in the past directly to your reader from Sony's site.

That's too bad. A large amount of my books were not purchased from the Sony site. Was hoping that I could load those up into the Sony library and be able to pull them off from the PC to the Reader.

Peter,
If the subject is still 650 or 950.....I had the 600 for a week and returned it for the 900.
The extra screen size (in landscape it's very elongated) makes it very easy to read if it's placed in a homemade styrafoam holder. I made a pad with some grooves that the reader and the cover (folded backwards) fit into that enable me to read lying down. It rests on my chest and is hands free. Most books in landscape read very well with the 2 page option in S size. I use a stylus, a finger, or the button - trading off every so often. With a pad it distributes the weight and doesn't seem so heavy. I understand the 950 is lighter than the 900. That wouldn't be a bad thing. I love this reader.

Cliff, Thanks, your posting provides very helpful info. And, yes, the subject is still 650 or 950.

I'm strongly leaning toward the 950 although some comments have made me remotely consider the iPad (this despite the fact I am not an Apple products enthusiast).

The 950 sounds about right.

I would keep ipad/tabletpcs separate from dedicated e-readers in my opinion. For that matter, I also would not think of any dedicated reader for web browsing.

I travel constantly for work, mostly to Europe (from West Coast US). The qualities important to me in a reader are 1) readability for long sustained periods and 2) battery life that will last even if you forget to charge it for many days.

The qualities for an ipad device that you might consider overlapping an e-reader's functionality include: reading color PDF's and web browsing. Both of these are NOT conducive to points 1 & 2.

Another way to break it down is by tech: E-readers work best with e-ink technology. But e-ink is not good for general computing/non-book consumption.

S, Thanks again! Your sound reasoning just convinced me to not even think remotely about the iPad.

I didn't consider the iPad too, at first. But I think for letter / A4 sized documents (with color), it's a great alternative. I was thinking about a Kindle DX for a while and also read magazines on my PRS600, but the iPad to me is the better way for that.
But like stated before, I also wouldn't consider an eInk for browsing the web.

Just my 2 cents.

Everyone what he/she needs

By the way, I'm not an apple fanboy either. I don't like their closed ecosystem and I bought a Zune just for not having an ipod. And I still love my 1st Gen Zune.

I have a question for PRS-900 users. Has anyone read manga on their PRS-900? How is the page displayed, are the pictures stretched out? (This might factor into my 650 vs. 950 buying decision, which is why I'm asking).
