Borders is my neighborhood book store. Can't find anything in there, unless it's brand new or bestseller. I was so impressed with it when it opened in 2004 and I liked that it was all on one level, but as I got to know it better, I get frustrated with the place. I would like for them to survive, however.

The Barnes & Noble nearest to me is closing in January -- real estate problem -- landlords in NYC are so greedy. It's the one near Lincoln Center.

I first had Krispy Kreme donuts while at UNC Greensboro in early '70s. Sellers would come around to the dorm late at night and sell them to us. There were also the stores. They came to NYC much later on.

Ah, yes. College students with the munchies, in the '70's. I bet those donut sellers were really bringing in the money!

Tim Horton's is quite possibly the best doughnut chain I've ever been to. Krispy Kreme, while not the worst, definitely ranks somewhere in that vicinity. So, great doughnuts and no wait? Win-win! I just wish they'd open locations in California! Though it's probably better for my health that they don't.

Yeah, I remember seeing it on the news here in Buffalo, but I never got it. Same lines for those Beanie Babies at McDonald's too. Both Buffalol locations closed, and so did the mini-shops that were carrying them. I didn't love their donuts, but they were a great company to the local charities - they used to donated hundreds of cases to our annual events. I've actually never eaten a KK warm, but I once ate a complete dozen while doing a 14 hour long television shoot. Kept my blood sugar high, but level!

Good stuff, although we're not fans of the coffee in our house. TimBits, yum. Now I'm hungry. They do a good soup in a bread bowl for lunch, too.

I'm still amazed at how quickly and dramatically Krispy Kreme crashed and burned in Massachusetts when I lived there.
I'm not surprised KK crashed and burned in Massachusetts - land of the Dunkin' Donuts. I've never seen so many donut shops in my life as in Boston. There was a DD just about every block. I wonder if Starbucks suffered the same fate?

Back on topic: Borders can crash and burn for all I care. I'm a bitter ex-Waldenbook manager - they bled that brand dry to feed the Borders cash cow, which they squandered. I laugh when I see their pathetic stock price hovering above penny stocks - the stock options they gave Waldenbooks managers instead of bonuses were worthless before they even sent us the paperwork three months late.

at least they are finally displaying their Kobos and libres (and the new ones, I'd assumed). Up until a week ago the 2 near me didn't have any out.

With the amount of fat and sugar in that thing, no wonder they taste good
They should come with a health warning on them though, same as ciggies.

The local Krispy Kreme here is closed. That's cause they aren't as good as the hype.

Fresh for 3 days?? For some reason people frequently give us these at our office and by the next day the donuts are always nastily soggy. And I'm in a desert with humidity that typically runs at 25% or lower.

When fresh, they're great. But by day's end, IMO, they're gross.

I'm more of a Dunkin' Donuts man, actually.

I haven't been in the now-closest Borders to me (the closest one, that had a huge SciFi-Fantasy section was closed down a couple years ago) in a few months, but the last time I was there, they only had empty boxes of the Sony Reader on display - they had apparently removed the test one (which never worked every time i tried it).

None of the Borders in my area are well-situated for walk-in traffic. They're usually at the end of stretch of buildings or across the street from the mall, etc. None of their cafes seem to do the business that the ones in B&N do. Also they're not reader friendly - no comfy chairs, etc. I can't see where Build-A-Bear is going to boost their walk-in traffic that much.

Well, I haven't tried Dunkin's or Tim Horton's, maybe I will get to some day.

Unfortunately, management at my work likes to bring in Top Pot for all hands meetings... blarg.
