The results look like a random sort. I used Calibre to double check the publication dates I entered and they are correct. Is there any way to look at the publication date as it's storred on the Kindle? |

I followed the 'symbol' option at lunchtime for my 47 collections and it worked a treat. I discovered that different 'symbols' have priority
_ is first, . is second * is third I didn't try any other symbols, but those three work for me, and for each symbol the collections are sorted within alpha order for that symbol |

What really ticks me off about this kluge, aside from it not yet working for me, is that the Metadata contains all the information needed to sort a series correctly. There is a Series category which contains the name of the series and the series sequence. It's all there for Amazon to use, but they don't. I guess the next step for me is to change my categories from the period to the underscore to see if that makes a difference. I'm using only one symbol since I want all categories to sort alphabetically. |

Using an underscore definitely does work. That's what I'm using.

I looked closer at the order of the books (Harry Potter) and discovered only one book is out of order. It is sorting first (Prisoner of Azkaban). The metadata is correct, it should sort third. I don't know why it's doing that.
I tried changing the category the HP books are in (and only that one) to start with an underscore space. When I sort by Title, the Rowling collection sorts last in the categories. The other collections sort alphabetically. If I sort by Collections, the Rowling category sorts first and the others after, but not alphabetically. I had expected the Title sort to put the underscore version first. Is there some obscure setting in my Kindle I'm missing? |

Sorting by USE
Frankly, I prefer the default option of sorting collections and books within collections by use.
I only read two books at one time and would like the ones I'm reading at the top of the list. For the others, its irrelevant. |

This is starting to wig me out. The Kindle I've been discussing is my wife's but mine arrived yesterday and I just put on the Pendergast books by Preston and Child. I first edited the published date for each one, giving the first book the most recent date and the next book the previous month and so on.
I used Calibre to update the published dates and to transfer them to my Kindle. I used Collection Manager to create a collection for them and move them into it. I rebooted the Kindle and except for one book they are all in order. The 5th book is sorting first. That's the same situation that's happening to the Harry Potter books on my wife's Kindle. What is going on? |

I just noticed that both out of order books have a published date using the month of July. The dates are properly sequenced, but that's a hell of a coincidence.

Problem Solved.
I finally noticed that both out of order books had the same problem. The metadata Author (not the Author Sort) were different from all the other books. In the Potter books the problem book Author began with "by J. K." instead of just "J. K." and the Pendergast series had a book with a slightly different Author name. What this tells me is that the Kindle Author sort is not by the Author Sort metadata. It uses the Author metadata. That seems like a poor decision to me. I've updated the Pendergast series, rebooted and confirmed that the sort is now correct. |

As I read your posts, jangell2, I was thinking it was a slight author difference (I've seen that myself), and then I saw you to came to the same conclusion. Glad you got the problem fixed.

I'm going to have to look at what Brewjono wrote about creating a catalog with Calibre. That sounds useful. |

With the Calibre catalog, once it is created I rename it with a symbol first, then space then catalog, and that way it appears first when I sort by Title. I have always used calibre, it is fantastic but gosh it chews up my RAM.
