Quote:
I thought that nook and Kindle were slick names. Nook is cutesy and evokes books, nooks and reading (although I was expecting a smaller device), and Kindle made me think of Fahrenheit 451. I do think some of the smaller companies could use a little originality - Cybook Opus doesn't say "smallest, lightest E-Ink device" to me. Orizon, if it ever comes out, doesn't say anything about reading to me. Although Bookeen at least sounds reading-related. Aluratek and Astak make other products, so I understand why their brand doesn't link up, but their model names are eh. Pandigital's Novel was almost too-focused - non-fiction readers may not even give it a look. And Augen's TheBook is just awkward. |

Bilbo, since they are all readers, I don't think that Sony should be able to call its device the Reader.
I think it should be the Sony Kapow reader, not the Sony Reader Kapow Edition. I think that everyone should have the right to call their devices readers, i.e., the Amazon Kindle reader. A trademark would prevent others from using the word "reader". |

Why not just call it "device", since it's simply just that?
"Honey, have you seen my device?" - ... okay, might be somewhat ambiguous. ![]() |

I don't think that would be a good combination of names. You put them together and soon after that your ereader won't turn on. Its kind of like putting the song "Gloomy Sunday" on an audio player.

I don't care what products are called, as long as they serve my needs.

Book Related:
Or maybe after writers and characters?
Marketing speak:
"Hand me the Athena." "Where's my BookBox? " "I'm reading my Libby!" "Who took my ThinkDeck?" "It was on my Codex." "Grab my Cipher -- I'll be right back." "My Twain is on the blink, can I borrow yours?" Fun to say! |

I'd say that the people who read already know more or less if they want an ebook reader or not. And the people who don't, won't get literary references in names.

Hi all,
I'm a little surprised the name "Pageturner" hasn't been proposed as yet. ![]() My fondest title for the current crop is "Opus", though for some it mat be less than intuitive. I tend to feel that as time passes, the term "book" or perhaps "reader" will become synonymous with the devices we have today, and their descendants. If said successors have access to the web with information as well as books on demand, perhaps "library" will need to be redefined. Someone mentioned copyright of "The Book" or similar. Not likely, I think. It was just a few years ago was it not, that Microsoft tried to tie "windows" up as its own word, and failed. The final say will probably come from the buyers though - something well-known, easy to say, and (in their minds) descriptive. With Kindles being so popular, this might be the go, in a similar manner to teflon from years ago. We'll know in a few years though. Cheers, |
