No IP restrictions.
Stated download policy is that the billing address of the credit card of record for the account is what rules.

Kindle customers from the United States can travel internationally and still get books in less than 60 seconds. Customers have the option to wirelessly receive periodicals and personal documents for a fee, or transfer files from their computer for free.
If you use 3G there would be a bandwidth fee.
With WiFi or PC downloading, it's free.

You can set up the account with a US-based credit card and then do all future purchases with gift cards. That you buy off another credit card.
(It's been done.)

As to De-DRM'ing Kindle books, it's not as easy as it used to be for books assigned to an actual Kindle Reader. Last I heard it was still doable for books assigned to Kindle-for-PC. That might change any day now.

Legal? Depends on the country; most western nations seem to frown on it.

Hmmm....maybe i should just get a Kindle on my European account. *SIGH* This is all too confusing to figure out so quickly.

About the danish library (Det Kongelige Bilbliotek), they offer mainly Pdfs and files that need to be read with a program called 'ebrary reader'. You cannot download it though because the link to that page is broken.

I assume that I may be better off with a big screen for some of these files.

So lets see...I could save 400 DKK by buying a Kindle in the US, which would probably work fine over here...hopefully have access to the same books (Hopefully!!) and have fewer problems converting files than I would if I were converting Amazon files to a non-kindle device....

So maybe a Kindle is a good idea.
I think I will primarily use this for pleasure reading, though if possible it could be nice to use it for academic purposes...although who knows if the texts I will need will be available in ebook format?

That was my impression from what I remember. I think it's fairly safe to say that a 6" reader will not satisfy you in this respect.

If you decide on a Kindle, I would definitely advice you to buy it through your American connections. There is no physical difference between the devices sold in USA or Europe. It's only dependant on what account it's registered to and what address is connected with the account.

I have an American address connected with my account set as default address and have so far not had any issues about buying Kindle books. But I don't buy a lot and perhaps simply fly below their radar. So to speak.

I think it's best to worry about what you need now rather than later. And who can say what Det Kongelige Bibliotek will offer in a year or two or three?

Well, I am glad to know that you have and successfully use a Kindle here!
And yes, biblioteket could change what they do...anytime. Besides, I don't know if they offer any books from my (hopeful) field of study in this format.

Now I just need to order one and pick it up (I am going to be in the USA for 3 weeks...we leave for a week in Mexico on Saturday, and then it will be 3 weeks with family in the states...in THEORY I should be able to order and receive a new Kindle in the time we have....)

And should your luck run out, it'd still be cheaper if they have to forward it to you in DK. A win-win situation

I will pop in later (when I get the chance) and update you all on my choice, when I got it, etc!! So exciting!!
