Actually, Stephen King books are available in ePub from the library. Janet's books published by Harpercollins are available. But the ones from SS& are not.

And, to stay on topic, here's a look at waiting lists at LA County Library:
(title, waiting list, copies) 1. The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, 58, 8 2. Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse #1), 7, 4 3. The Girl Who Played with Fire, 34, 5 4. Sh*t My Dad Says, 10, 2 5. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, 25, 5 6. Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang, 8 ,1 7. Beachcombers by Nancy Thayer - not available 8. Private by James Patterson, 8, 2 Overall, I'd say not too unreasonable of waiting lists, unless maybe you're trying to read one of the Larsson novels... |

BC libraries are all lumped together on ebooks so they serve several million, but the wait times haven't seemed too bad for me.
I have two library cards and could get more if necesssary. If I want a book I just wait, and I search the available ones and usually find a couple to download immediately. Certainly can't complain about the price ![]() |

Also thank you for the new link for the LAPL. I don't have a PIN for my library card, so I'll make a trip to one of the branches near me to see if I can get one. BTW, L.A. County emailed me this morning and they are working out the logistics of me making an ebook donation. One key player is out on vacation this week, so I won't know until next week. |

This is true. His S&S published books are not available at the library via Overdrive.

Chicago Public Library:
Fiction: 1. THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST, by Stieg Larsson, 12 copies, 52nd on list 3. THE HELP, by Kathryn Stockett, 6 copies, 31st (but while looking this up, I saw the mobi version was available, and I snagged it. Thanks!) 4. STAR ISLAND, by Carl Hiaasen, there is no one on the wait list, 1 copy 5. VEIL OF NIGHT, by Linda Howard, audio only Non-Fiction: 1. _____ MY DAD SAYS, by Justin Halpern, 12 copies, 58 on waiting list 5. CHELSEA CHELSEA BANG BANG, by Chelsea Handler, 10 copies, 49 on waiting list Since you cannot return mobi books early, I set the default period for those to 7 days. Any book can be checked out for 21 days. You get 5 days to download the book. I definately don't use the library for a book I have to read NOW (although I did snag Sh*t My Dad Says last month, after the first person only kept it out for a week). But I put everything I don't put on my hold list on my wish list, and I check it daily. I try to put only relatively new books on my hold list, and wait for the older books to get less popular (But is Atlas Shrugged ever going to be available?) Luckily, I have never been at a loss for something to read. I consider the library a great source for things I want to read some day, but not most things I want to read now. I don't know why, but it appears the CPL is ordering fewer and fewer ebooks every month. I don't know if it is because they are more expensive, or if their pbook ordering is also down. That is a shame, because in a recession, libraries are even more important. Last edited by Sydney's Mom; 08-24-2010 at 10:08 PM. |
