I'm reading this forum and typing in my car while waiting for someone. There's some glare on my iPad screen, but not so much that it interferes with my reading or writing. I've done the same on blindingly sunny days not had a problem. When It's bright out, I just turn up the brightness on my iPad.

Seconded!

I have been using an iPad since the day it came, and the trusty 505 has been gathering dust. However I have ordered a K3, because the Kindle app on the iPad and the K3 will stay in sync, and the K3 has got to the point where (for me) it is cheap enough to justify its specific purpose - reading on the beach or by the pool! In the meantime, the iPad has survived in those situations.

Substitute a CyBook for your 505 and that's exactly my situation as well; in fact I'll bet it isn't uncommon amongst iPad users. I just wish Amazon would produce a keyboard-less Kindle - for me, the keyboard will serve no function and just makes the device bigger than necessary.

i had a prs 505, i think one of the best (tried kindle, nook, iliad :-().
And now it has a new companion in my travel/working bag: iPad!
I think they are totally different devices so... iPad isnt difficult or easy to read... you just use to read where is menat to be more comfortable: when you want to check mail, or read some news - ideas or doubts that come from your reading, check online dictionary o wikipedia, take some notes for later on computer (i know you can do with ebook reader, but more comfortable this way).

I find the Ipad is not good to read on outside because of the glare . I have no problems using my other readers outside . The Ipad is very good inside I can even read in bed without turning on my bedside lamp.

I do the majority of my reading on my Kindle 2 but I do read outdoors frequently and this is where the screen excels.

I also have an ipod touch which is great for web browsing like now but a little small ... the current iPad is too big and heavy for me, I tried it in the Apple store.

I heard a rumour that a smaller 7" iPad may be out before Xmas - if so, that sounds perfect for me.

The iPad is about the same weight as the typical hardback book. I agree with you that it's rather heavy to hold up, but reading with it resting on your lap is very comfortable.

I am just the opposite. I can't stand to read on the Ipad other than for short periods browsing pages. There is no combination of full screen text against lit background or lit text against black background that feels good after a while. I go back to my KDXG for book reading. It is more like reading an actual book.

I find using the sepia mode in the Kindle app, with the brightness turned down, or a similar setup in Stanza, to be the easiest on the eyes.

I find myself using the sepia mode during daytime works great for me but when I read in bed I switch to the black background with white print. And while I have a real fondness for actual books, particularly hardback books given a lifetime habit of reading them, I find myself really enjoying reading on the iPad using the Kindle app. I just wish they would add the iBooks feature that would let me know how long it is to the end of a particular chapter.

Sorry, but I completely disagree. There are a number of advantages to an iPad as an ereader--having a much larger screen and not being limited as to format or a particular ebook retailer are two of the biggest.

And a $10 book light doesn't remotely compare to reading in the dark on the iPad. I read for eighteen months on a Kindle, and tried several book lights during that time. Not one illuminated evenly, and that was on a 6" screen. The iPad is evenly lit across a lot more screen real estate, and the various apps allow me to use black text on white, sepia on off white, or white on black. These options, plus the adjustable brightness, mean I can read the iPad in a number of different lighting conditions without having to carry around supplemental equipment.

The only advantages my Kindle has are reading in bright sunlight, and a lighter weight form factor. I'm a fair skinned redhead...you can imagine how frequently I read outdoors. LOL In truth, I'm pretty equally reading on either device, but like Harry, if I had to pick only one, I'd choose the iPad.

Sorry, but I disagree.

I have a Sony 505 and use a book light with great results. I like the light so much, that I recently switched to using the light all the time when I read indoors.

I'm curious: I have a CyBook as well. My current dilemma is how to sync my current page when I am reading across different devices. Do you read to a chapter end then remember (in your head) what chapter you were on? Do you use a sync program to somehow send your bookmark file from one device to another? If so what?

Thanks for any advice. I have a blackberry and a Cybook and I read on my netbook and I have an ipod touch on order. I've settled on one book per device...but that ends up making the less used device book move so slowly that I forget where I am in the story and what's happening.
