I went out early and the sky was brilliantly lit. figured I would go out later since the internal alarm gets me up at 3 am ALWAYS! guess what?

You'll generally see more meteors after midnight than before, because then the Earth's rotation is turning you "into" the path of the dust stream that produces the meteors.
