A pigopolist is something between a pig and an oligopolist. Perhaps it applies more to music where there are all of five publishers (but who form one cartel). I guess the clueless yuppies is more about itunes owners too.

HarryT, you're not a clueless yuppie because you say you don't buy from Connect. Or iTunes, I hope. Actually, iTunes deserves some credit. Steve Jobs put his foot down and forced all songs to be $1 back when music companies felt they wouldn't sell anyway. These days, the music cartel is mad that they're not charging you $2.50. P.S. note how the very idea of the ipod is a bit silly without stealing. It would take you $10,000 to actually fill one. $25,000 if the yuppies hadn't been so lucky. Hence, the trickle of media is like sucking on a teat. (thanks for the correction)

And as for stealing books... next thing you're gonna say is we should abolish libraries. More money for you, eh, harryt? And if you say you get money from libraries, then I'd say I'd support my taxes going to compensate you for my "non-traditional borrowing."

Or, if you've bought CDs over the course of your life, somewhat less via fair use.

Say all you want about the "content cartel" being evil. I think it would be great if content creators could sell their own work directly, and I think it's silly to try to restrict how someone who purchases content uses it (within the bounds of the concept of Fair Use). Meanwhile, I'm not going to steal books OR music, if there's a way to pay the content creators through the only channels they currently get paid through.

(Out of print books or music are a different story.)

If you feel strongly about this, and I commend you sincerely if you do, you can always find the author's email address and paypal them some money. It's simple, and if they've already set up the account, automatic. You will most likely be sending them much more than they would be normally receiving, and I would feel even better that my money isn't also supporting unjustified greed and a broken institution founded on power.

Well it is true that with mp3 and online marketplaces, we don't really need those majors anymore. They're only good when you need ads and videos for MTV. I guess we'll see more and more artists selling their music directly, but it'll take some time.

Sadly, the almost mind-bogglingly obscure technical books that I write tend not to be in the "Best Seller" list . University libraries might have a copy, but that's about it.

I've not bought anything from iTunes either, BTW. I have a large CD collection of classical music - especially opera - and that, plus a few audio books, are what's on my iPod.

I use a Creative Zen, not an iPod. Never wanted to get messed up with the iTunes software. Everything music on the Zen is either a fair use rip of something I own in either CD or Lp. Also on the Zen are a number of old radio shows that have passed out of copyright.

One of the books on the Reader is Steve Jordan's recent work. Good read.
