I use a free application, GFI Backups, to backup all my important files. I have a 2TB external drive that I put backups from my internal drive and another external drive. You can do full or incremental backups with it.
It's easy to install and configure. You can schedule backups so once it's setup you can forget about it.

As long as its really easy to understand lol I'm an oldie
Would you trust it with family photo and video archives too?
Is the backup just the same as copy and paste? eg Looks the same folders

I backup my books with DropBox, and I can redownload them right from Kobo Touch's web browser.

polli,
I use GFI Backup for my photo libraries and my audio and video collections ( close to 700 GB ) and it's never been a problem.
You can find it here : http://www.gfi.com/pages/backup-freeware.asp
