You pretty much hit all the reasons, Neil.

I first came when I was putting several of my o.p. backlist books into e-format for free distribution, in preparation for a new title coming out. At first I just poked around, wondering what the place was all about. Almost instantly, people started offering to help me. It was amazing. Much of the credit for the nice formatting of my free titles goes to folks here. Then, after the first blitz of getting the books ready was over, and the initial bit of introducing myself to the audience, MR became a community to visit every day, just to be part of the community.

Learning about Calibre, Freda, and all that came later.

You mean that there are more Europeans. Mostly UK.

A solution could be of setting the thread in order that the posts' flow is placate. So that a reply with a delay of 12 hours is not lost in the traffic of one liners. Your recent thread on American Gods was quite successful from this and from the international points of view.

Informative threads do not pose problems. It is the discussions.

I came here by chance when I was researching my impulse buy of a Sony PRS-600. I wanted to find out just what I had bought and this place helped me with so much (I mainly just read lots and LOTS of posts!).

I stay/post because it is a place where I feel I can comfortably say that I read that book yesterday - and not have people look at me as a freak because I read so fast.

It's just nice to know that there are a lot of people out there who, while not just like me, are enough like me to make me feel comfortable being the book-reading gadget freak that I am.

I came here because I bought a Sony Reader 500, and got caught up in making ebooks (LRF format).

Everyone has written so many great reasons, that's it's hard for me to articulate only one; but, if I could boil it all down to one, then I'd have to echo beppe's post - his post #20 - that so very nicely summarizes my own feelings and in such a fine way.

This is a great community.

One more thing that strikes me beyond the international makeup is the fairly evenly distributed gender makeup. My experience is mainly from golf related fora and they are overwhelmingly male dominated. Here is a rich and diverse female active participantship (is that a word?) that in my mind is a contributing factor to the balanced and genteel posting atmosphere.
My first experience, back in the early 80's was with early adapters of PC vs. Apple computers. That is when I realized that religion had move out of places of worship into silicon. Hence, I was kind of apprehensive at first, thinking that it would replay itself between different E-book platforms. The only thing close to that I suppose are the ePub promoters. They seem to be a little more hardline than the rest.

Because I have few RL friends. Seriously, it isn't as sad as it sounds. I worked for two years with my best friend, in a school for at-risk students. We rode to and from work together, and socialized together afterward because our husbands worked together and were friends. We also lived in a VERY small town, where the main form of entertainment was gossiping about everyone else. Believe me, after a short time there is nothing else to say because there are so few people there. LOL (oh, we also helped get each other through our sons' senior year. They were friends, too, though not that close. Is that enough in common for two people?)

I had to get some outside contact. I don't even remember how I stumbled across this site, but have loved it since then.

Ummmm... You know, you did a pretty good job of enumerating *my* reasons. Ditto!

I agree with you Ea I find Mobileread vibrant and alive. The activity/posts goes on pretty much 24/7 (and for me the lovely Americans never seem to sleep they're posting when I'm posting , to my delight I might add).

I have read books I never would have read if it wasn't for all the great tips shared with joy by other MR users and to think about all the hard work that are put in to format, proof read and upload books so others may enjoy countless hours of reading.

But not just only that, I find the user interface really good. Things just work and posting is really easy.

This community is filled with positive people who likes to read and encourage other people to read. I post at MR because I feel a part of this family and contributing feels natural.

Thank you Alexander Turcic for starting Mobileread.

I read more than I post (I have no idea where that 3,974 posts number comes from ).

I visit to learn stuff, for the silliness, to find out what fellow readers around the world are up to - and to correct anyone who disagrees with what I think.
