The reviewer gave their opinion. That is what a review is. If the person was offended by the anti-religious elements of the book, then they were offended. As odd as it may seem to the often closed minds in media, there are alternative viewpoints.
To the author I say, if you have 8 positive reviews and one negative, that's good! Instead of whining about it, accept a nearly 90% positive and move on. A "good" or "bad" book is in the mind of the beholder, that's the whole point of reviews...... |

Just write a note back to their review, something along the lines of:
Dear Reviewer, Are you mental? Yours Author. |

No, no, if you're going to do that, you have to go all Anne Rice on them! It's much more entertaining for the fans.

Corona,
Thanks for your support, but I think an update is in order. Believe it or not, the person who wrote the negative review, Frankie Sutton, is actually a very nice lady. Over the summer we exchanged a number of emails and got to know each other. Aside from our politics, we have a lot in common. I've come to the conclusion that I never should have made a big deal about her review. An author who wants to be taken seriously needs to develop a thick skin. And Frankie helped me in the skin-thickening department. She had every right to her opinion and I should have let it be. Anyway... this month I started promoting my other novel, The Haircut, A New Year's Tale" since it has a holiday theme. And, lo and behold or oy vey, Frankie Sutton bought a copy and left a review. It turned out to be A RAVE REVIEW. She gave it five stars and even started recommending it to others on the Amazon forums. Then, to my amazement, she somehow removed her negative Amazon review of New Coastal Times. She didn't have to do that. She probably shouldn't have done that. But I know she was just trying to be nice. I chalk the whole thing up to... Well... I don't know what I chalk it up to. Maybe there's hope for world peace after all. Maybe it's an early New Year's miracle. Maybe we all just crave happy endings. In any case, I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Happy reading to all, and to all a good night. Donna |

Good outcome, Donna.
Maybe in writing the second review, Frankie realised that her first wasn't so much a review of your book as it was her using the opportunity to vent about some personal feelings of her own, that were brought to mind by your book. That's how her review read to me from the first, anyway. The Internet: a place where people confuse expressing an opinion with the chance to be snarky. |
