Somebody else earlier in this thread claimed that the posts were removed because they violated the terms of the forum. I was just curious if that was actually true, and what the terms were that would prohibit linking to negative reviews.

Apple can remove whatever they like from their own forum, just as we can (and do) here at MR - nobody has a "right to free speech" on such a forum. I strongly suspect that most company support forums will remove material considered to be damaging to the company.

Well the terms of use are here.
A cursory search for Consumer Reports is here.

Didn't see the deleted posts, so I don't know what they contained.

Also, I don't think many people realize that Apple has a very minor presence on those boards...they are set up as "user-to-user" help forums, not user-to-Apple Genius. You may occasionally see an actual Apple employee step in, but it isn't really that common. I don't think Steve posts there

Of course people have the right to free speech. The fact that such posts get deleted is irrelevant. Free speech is still exercised.
Besides, I would like to see one of these cases tested in the law of court. I am sure that legally speaking the situation is not as simple as you are suggesting in your post Harry.

Wouldn't it depend on the terms of service? How about If Apple's terms of service said something like "...we (Apple), valuing clear and open dialog with our customers, absolutely will not remove posts unless they are vulgar or insulting to other members..." Could they delete a link to an unfavorable review?

Just curious?

It's a privately run forum; its owners can remove whatever posts they wish. What law would you think would say otherwise?

Not on a private forum they don't. Free speech has to do with the government not stopping you from speaking. Free speech doesn't apply to private property.

Except that they don't say anything like that. It basically says they can remove anything they want to for any reason.

I realise you would get kicked out, but you could exercise your freedom of speech nevertheless. So what if you get banned or kicked out?

What I said if of course hypothetical, but for the sake of argument let's take a newspaper or a TV station. Privately owned.
The owners of such media institutions do not have a free reign to decide what can be said and what cannot be said without any checks and balances.
This is where the line does get a bit thin.

I dunno about this....

A few years ago, after trying to make a Mac Mini serve as a HTPC, I realized that there was no good front end for OS X, and went to Windows MCE (and for a while Media Portal).

Microsoft took over a private HTPC forum dedicated to Media Center, and at times there were (and still are), MS employees chiming in to help users. (I duly noted to myself how different the Apple forums were.)

I've seen some rather nasty threads and posts attacking Microsoft and its products. Not once can I recall such a thread or a post having been deleted.

It was a great surprise to me, and actually changed my view of MS a bit.

So, I can point to at least one company which, in my experience, hasn't done this.
