Especially nice since the PSP accessories are available for cheap.

Say, has anyone tried the USB PSP charger? It looks to me like a standard USB cable with a power tap on the other end, so maybe it will actually work, if someone has one handy and can give it a try....

That's absurd

I'm not sure why this restriction is in place (it's even fussier than my iPod about what it takes for USB charging) but at least they put in a dedicated charger jack.
This has changed in the PRS-505. I have never installed the s/w that came with it, and it works charging from my desktop PC. It also works with a +5V power source (cigarette lighter to USB) in my pickup.

It would save having to carry around a lot of extra stuff that could be left behind in hotel rooms on my travels.

Cheers.
The PRS-505 works this way.

Which reader are you referring to?

Thank God that Sony fixed this unacceptable, sorry problem before they released the PRS-505.

Look at the date of my post and make a guess
EDIT: it seems the real date got lost at some point... anyway, it was about the 500, naturally.

Anyone have any insight into this question w.r.t. the 505? Which is meant to be more standard for USB charging?

A workaround

I bought a very inexpensive PSP cable that has a USB connector at one end that plugs into a standard USB charger. The other end has two connectors: a mini USB connector (not used for the Reader charging) and a PSP/Reader compatible power plug that is used to deliver the juice to the Reader via the Reader power connector. The purists will note that this is not using the Reader USB port for charging but it does allow me to use USB wall charging module to charge my Reader, Blackberry, and so forth. Same result.

I am new to the Sony family of eBooks. I know the PRS-505 came out in the last few months, but don't know the timeline for the Libre & PRS-500 & whatever else they had before that.

Many thanks for this sage advice - it saved my sanity on Boxing day when I couldn't get my 505 to charge.

Now up and running!

Thanks again,

Regards,

White

a normal (ipod) usb charger does not work!
i tried also a motorola mini-usb charger - it doesn't work, too
same with the chasrger for my tomtom (mini-usb)

i bought a cheap charger for the reader (psp) ob ebay - that works.

to bobva
i charged the reader with the normal usb-cable on my office pc without the e-Reader software installed - it charged.

regards

This has been rehashed to death here, but I'll repeat: jwhayn above has the best solution:

"I bought a very inexpensive PSP cable that has a USB connector at one end that plugs into a standard USB charger. The other end has two connectors: a mini USB connector (not used for the Reader charging) and a PSP/Reader compatible power plug that is used to deliver the juice to the Reader via the Reader power connector."

This PSP charge/data cable will charge from any pc or other usb charging source (incl. usb wallworts and car chargers). Plus the mini-usb can be used to transfer books to the Reader as well.

I'm not sure exactly why or when, but often attempting to charge via mini-usb on a PC w/o the Library sw can DRAIN the Reader's battery. Do so at your own risk.

Besides, charging via the power socket (and not the mini-usb) is faster. And far more reliable.

Naw, if it was software controlled, it would not work on a Mac, which does not have the Sony software.

I actually tried it with a simple generic USB main adaptor and it worked fine. yes, I'm fearless with my PRS505!

I have tried that several times with various brands of adapters with no joy.

Are you sure the red charging light went on? No light, no charge.
