If you buy an Apple phone you have the hold it in the "approved" Apple way, I guess .

I'm rather surprised that it didn't show up in testing, because it's an immediately obvious effect. If you hold the phone by its edges, and then press your palm into the base of it, the signal slowly fades to absolutely nothing in about 15 sec. Take your palm away and it fades back in again to full strength in about the same time.
As a left handed person, I would have a big problem with this defect. As you said, it is really weird they didn't pick this up during testing.

I'm totally south paw - I can't hold the phone to my right ear. Even if I have to use my left hand to write something down, I try to hold the phone up with my shoulder against the ear - or hold it pressed to my left ear with my right hand.
Yup, it looks weird.

Good news; I spoke to Apple tech support, who in turn put me through to a "senior analyst" - who has said that he'll send me a free bumper!

I’m foreign, could somebody explain to me what a bumper is please? I searched Wikipedia but none of the definitions seem to match. Is that some sort of case for the antennaes?

BTW, Engadget said this problem probably didn’t occur during betatesting because the iPhones were hidden in cases. I guess a little less secrecy would have spared Apple from this fauxpas.

The name "bumper" comes from the thing on the front of a car that protects it in low-speed collisions. Apple are using this name for a rubber protective strip that fits around the edges of the iPhone 4.

Thanks for the explanation! So essentially this Apple-branded bumper protects the iPhone from ... direct contact with the user. Well done Apple, well done.

Of course, Jobs could have accused left-handed people of being lazy....

Or, He could have claimed that left-handed people are on their way out.

(I just ordered a 4" Super AMOLED Samsung Galaxy S - I'd guess I can hold it any way I want to).

My phone doesn't have this problem but it feels obvious that the antenna is coated with something. I'm personally betting on a manufacturing snafu they will own up to down the road.

There are lots and lots of very cheap iPhone 4 cases on eBay. I've ordered a couple of different ones to see what works best.

I bet you are right. That would explain why some have the problem and some don't..... I am sure in the end it will be all right, but at the point Apple is not handling it right... to say the least....

well. i had the reception problem. i took one of those silicone bracelets, you can wrap it around the iphone. it blocks the buttons but doesn't depress them. and my signal issue is resolved. cheaper than a "bumper" from apple. but disappointing they didn't resolve this before the phone was released. going to give it a few weeks for the various cases to be released then find one i like. i have to remove the band to plug it in and charge it, but not a big deal. on an up-note there are plenty of colors available. lol.
