Buying new books in Australia is often very, very painful to ones wallet, anyway. The average MMPB that I can get is about 15-20 dollars, sometimes more, sometimes less. Nevermind if it's a bigger paperback or, god forbid, a hard cover (for a new hard cover novel, they can easily be $50 or more).

This is in my experience, of course, and I do live in a rural area. But it still is quite horrible. Mind you, in rural area's, at least, it's not unknown for new books, dvd's, etc, etc to "fall off the back of a truck". And this is with physical goods! You'd think they'd want to make ebooks easier.

Too true

Large format paperbacks can cost up to $41.

Paul Ham's Vietnam comes to mind at that price.

Due to Australian pricing I've bought most of my paper books from Amazon US for over 10 years: if one bought them a boxful at a time, with the cheapest shipping, they were much cheaper than buying them locally with a far better range than available in Newcastle.

Which makes the geo restrictions on ebooks even more irksome, and pointless.

Nothing's free in Australia. Hiding in the beautiful landscape are some of the deadliest animals on the planet, and the sky is the same.

It's a great place to visit, but I value my life too much to stay. :P

BAH - I've been here over 30 years, and it hasn't killed me yet!

(although I did learn young to shake out my bedding before lying down... and shake my shoes upside-down before putting them on next morning)

Oh yeah, the topic... When it comes to books, Australia has traditionally had two main problems - few readers, and far apart. Interestingly, I'm noticing more and more people on the train who're reading on mobile phones... I think our regular-reader numbers might be increasing with the advent of ebooks. Our publishers MIGHT click soon.

Sometimes I genuinely think they want us to buy overseas so they simply don't need to bother. xD

...They really do need to get their act together, though. But one can say that for pretty much the entire consumer electronics area, amongst other things. They make it a pain to buy things at reasonable cost, and then declare no one is buying so no one must want [insert new product/market here].
