this should lead you to understand something interesting..

so at this point someone of you should reply here and finally tell us if you intend to add full screen, continuous and a FULL FEATURED flip bar in panning mode in the next firmware..
so eventually I can stop wasting my time in hacking dr800 software..

Gotta look at it from the DR1000 side too. (Potential) owners of that device pay a good deal more (than DR800 owners) for a device of which some of the functionality is still not delivered (a proper suspend for example -- and some will even be removed, for a while or forever, with 2.0), while a lot of the company's attention goes to the DR800.

The DR800 is no doubt a great device, but it would be foolish of iRex to drop the ball on the DR1000 altogether along the way. As we can see by the speed at which new firmware versions are delivered, the company can only do so much in any given period of time. Bad management? How about limited resources?

I got your point. But it just doesn't change some facts. Plus, RD800 was not design only for everyday ebook users but also for students and academicians. Newspapers and magazines are not supposed to be red on an average reader, right?.

IREX has been facing some problems and finally they filed for chapter 11. Most dealers are not selling 1000 as well as 800. Hence, they can not drop the ball on DR1000. The ball is already dropped on the company itself. That kind of feature additions are not going to hurt the 1000 sales but it will only make good customers who bought DR800 in such a short period of time after it was available. IREX should consider it like one last favour to its loyal customers.

@CoolDragon: the main screen paint problem just happened once after I reset the device and the whole screen looked washed up (a refresh help). Actually, the only disadvantages of the patching are that the power bar is not visible in portrait mode (and also that icon which changes the screen modes) and that the screen looks a bit crowded, but the advantages are far more.

Do you know something different or just FUD? Kinda hard on us windows people with Cooldragon binaries removed.
I'm not talking about the source code, but the actual firmware (which contains stuff that isn't GPL). The UDS, specifically, is not open source and is copyrighted.

To be honest, that means you probably shouldn't try this yet. Let others who are more technical figure out the problems first. If you're having trouble figuring out how to install this, you would probably also have trouble figuring out how to fix your device if something bad happened.

Just my advice.

Comparing relative sizes of two binaries doesn't mean a whole lot.

Why don't you post what you have found out? You said something "legal" and wanted to write an application to enable continuous/page flow but you never said what you are trying to do.

Anyway, someone, after trying out my hacking way, found out that "page flow" and "full screen" can be achieved with the DR800's original uds. All you need to do is setting the property in the SQLite database.

So now the proper and legal way to enable "page flow" should be modifying dr800's popupmenu, which is open sourced, so that it provides an icon/menu entry to enable/disable the "page flow" mode, and call SQLite, which is open sourced too, to make needed change.

I am not sure if I will have the time to modify the popupmenu these days, but anyone interested can go ahead.

Under all this secret I presume code is already included in the DR800 binary, but there is some code checking at runtime (popupmenu? some file including model version?) that shows one behaviour or the other.

Anyway, just speculations. If I have time I'll try to do a binary diff between both versions in a few days. Uhmmm, is there strace compiled into qemu?...

OK, this won't work. Looked at the popupmenu code, it only draws whatever uds tells it to draw, so the ultimate decision is made by uds. And popupmenu cannot get the handle to the currently opened document.

So if someone wants the "page flow" mode without changing DR800's binary, he has to do it externally: either use a PC/Linux SQLite tool to change the metadata.db to set/unset the property, or write a DR800 program to do the management.

I have modified the popupmenu code so that it displays less icons on the left side of the status bar, leaving room for the battery icon. Also the threshold for displaying how many bars in the battery icon are changed to the same as DR800. See attached file.

Attached is a simple script to toggle between both versions.

As I can't include uds binaries here, please follow next instructions to make it work:

0. uncompress attached file to your computer
1. copy uds from DR1000 as uds.dr1000
2. copy uds from DR800 as uds.dr800
3. copy popupmenu from DR1000 as popupmenu.dr1000
4. copy popupmenu from DR800 as popupmenu.dr800
5. copy /usr/share/icons/toolbar_*.png files from DR1000 to folder usr_share_icons
6. and finally, copy this "_udstoggle" folder and "udstoggle.desktop" file to your DR800 "/media/mmcblk0p1/Programs"

And remember to reboot after running it.

Try out my modified popupmenu.dr1000 for showing battery icon in portrait mode.

I'm using it right now... it's quite impressive.

My main concerns are:
- only 2 columns of icons. Btw, if you change to landscape mode and the back, 3 columns of icons are shown but they come back to 2 when changing view or folder.

- imho, landscape mode should be rotated 180ē... but I remember someone posted a trick... ok here it is:
Code:
xrandr -display 0:0 --screen 0 --orientation inverted
- messages while starting device or connection to USB are misplaced

I am annoyed by this 2 columns icon view too, so I switched to list view. Maybe there is something we can do in CTB to fix this.

Maybe something related to popupmenu.
