The only way to make eReader perfect is to 100% redo the format.

My perfect e-reader must allow me to do the following: read pdfs and e-books in a decent sized screen (around 8'' to 9''), with a a clear contrast (preferably adjustable contrast capability), in a (for the moment) B&W screen, a touch screen (fingers, not only stylus) and not having to wait several seconds for the screen image to refresh; also I would love the zoom controls to be with sliders and not not arrows (like on the PRS-600).
I do not need internet connection for this one and the price tag must be on the 200 to 250 Euros.
I know I have to wait some months for something like this to arrive... (Asus DR-900, Copia Ocean 9, etc...)

My one major issue with e-ink is that there is a slight delay between screen refreshes, especially with the Nook. I know this is small, but when you compare this to the responsiveness of say the iPad, it lingers in your mind a bit.

The reader that I most throughly analysed was the PRS-600; the thing that made not buy it was the fact that when (trying to) reading a pdf file with over 20 Mb the zoom movements always had a several seconds delay and that ruined my experience with it.

LOL, maybe we are really spoiled nowadays since just a few years ago, we had mainframe computers that took up the whole room. I dunno..

Can't agree with you more.

The firmware programmers for the 2 readers I have seem to be hibernating, even when bugs are crawling all over the firmware, esp the those @ iRiver.

Maybe we are spoiled: but when investing my money I prefer to do it on something worthwhile. As I said it's a matter of waiting (preferably not too many) months...

It's possible our "it's never good enough" mentality may mean we have to wait forever for that perfect ereader. In my mind, there is no such thing as a perfect ereader unless I designed it. I'm gonna have to make do with what's out there and so far, about 90% satisfaction is good enough for me.

This is not really a question of an eternal wait for the "perfect" reader: just the sufficient wait for the adequate device. One that is enough responsive to make the reading experience (of large format, with lots of photos , pdfs) pleasant enough to make worth while the investment of money into it.

Hmm....maybe we should have a "cutoff" time. Sometimes, I'm just too impatient and will go for the instant gratification. But waiting a few weeks would probably be a wiser choice and one way of doing this without feeling too bad would be to have a limit to the time we're willing to wait.

Not having the money to buy one because your laptop died also helps one wait

Would have to kindly disagree.... I really think that being disappointed in the lag time of e-ink is demanding a bit too much out of e-ink...

1. Turning a pbook is not instantaneous(most people read pbooks for years).
2. I rarely notice the delay when I am engrossed in a book
3. Color/Colour....just don't get it....

If you read text mostly you don't need it. If you read Manga you don't need it...All the Manga in Japan is published in Black and White....well most of it anyways...

I just came back from a vacation in the sun. I had my PC and my e-ink eReader (iRex and Sony) with me. My plan was to work on my photos on my PC on the afternoons when I wasn't piloting the boat. Didn't work. Couldn't see the screen well enough even under a bimini. It was a hard life - it just meant that I had to read my e-ink display instead. Much as I love my laptop I sure don't want its technology as my reader. Was that ever brought home to me last week.

For me is all about a decent refresh time when using the zoom functions: I tried my scanned pdf book on a PRS-600 and the delay really turned my off. I think with a more powerful processor the e-ink (B&W) screen would be great for me...
