• You can now just specify the etext number to download, it first tries to download the HTML version and then the text version. (text versions require Gutenmark to be installed)

It's one of those old badly formatted Gutenberg files that hasn't been converted to the new standard file layout. You'll need to use the text file or convert the HTML manually.

Ah, that's too bad. By convert the HTML manually, do you mean to a form that gutlrf can work with? If so, what would I need to do?
I'm trying to preserve the illustrations that exist in the HTML version (that aren't in the text version, of course).

Looking at the ZIP file, it uses separate chapter files (very non-standard for Gutenberg) so it won't work with gutlrf. You could manually convert it using libprs500's html2lrf, I think that can handle separate html files into one LRF.

I can't believe I didn't see this utility sooner. I was very disheartened when I saw all of my Gutenberg downloads had the crazy naming scheme so they've just been sitting in an archive. Thanks for doing all the hard work!!!

When I try to convert a Gutenberg book, either from the site direct or from a zip file saved on my hard disk I get;

"Converting text book...
'gutenmark' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

No such file or directory at M:\mydownloads\gutlrf\gutlrf.pl line 167."

(obviously m: mydownloads etc is where I have the gutlrf file)

Any ideas what is going wrong?

Have messed around some more and suspect I have been trying to convert straight txt files rather than html ones. Am I right?

If so, is there a way of converting Gutenberg txt files which are not available as html?

if you are converting straight text, Book Designer is a good tool to help you convert to LRF. You'll need to get the Book Designer installer, the update, and the Book Cleaner files.

Always go for the HTML ones if you can. It looks like that book only has a text version so gutlrf tries to use Gutenmark to convert it. All you need to do is download Gutenmark.exe and make sure it is in your PATH (i.e. "set PATH"), you could stick it in c:\windows\ if your not sure what I'm on about.

I found the problem with the book in the link above - the contents.html page has an error in that a comment (<!-- -->) wasn't formatted properly. Hooray - it now converts! I guess I should learn how to submit corrections to Gutenberg...

I'm liking gutlrf.
