The Face in the Frost by John Bellairs - I just finished it, and it was great! It's also a quick read.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick RothFuss. And give Empress by Karen Miller a try. Its not traditional sword/sorcery but I couldn't put it down. I am rereading WOT by Robert Jordan in his memory, but I had forgotten how huge his books are. lol

My wife and I have been pouring through Brandon Sanderson's books lately, and I can't recommend him, particularly the Mistborn series, highly enough.
You can download an ebook version of his most recent novel, Warbreaker, for free from his website. He's also got loads of sample chapters for his other books. He's also been tapped to write the final books in the Wheel of Time series that a number of other posters have already recommended. |

Okay! Finished the whole Abhorsen trilogy -- definitely a recommended series! The first part got me slightly confused (as with all fantasy books, what with the whole new world and stuff), but it progressively gets better.
If you can get your hands on an eBook copy, try it and tell me what you think ![]() Now, trying to decide between Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time) or George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire).. anyone? Also, has anyone read Stieg Larsson? His books seem wildly popular but I haven't heard anyone talking about it.. you could give trudy canavan's "black magician" series a try
Magician’s Apprentice (prequel) -> Black Magician Trilogy -> Traitor Spy Trilogy (sequel) and you definitely want to read Leibers "Fafhrd & Grey Mouser" books being THE pillars of "sword and sorcery" as a fantasy subgenere the latter ones are even avail as a nice drm-free ebook bundle: http://www.webscription.net/p-1213-f...ollection.aspx |

https://www.fictionwise.com/ebooks/t.../?seriesid=151 Very highly recommended. Each book is pretty much a stand-alone. I've re-read the first one, The Misenchanted Sword, several times. Even knowing the ending it's a great read. Last edited by pdurrant; 06-17-2010 at 03:27 AM. |

I bought these books and tried to read them. I found them boring and not captivating, which I expected from the number of recommendations the books have received.

Some people have said that the series tails off in later books. I haven't read any Robert Jordan, but again and again I have heard it said that the first three of four Wheel of Time books are great, but later books are really, really bad. |

I have read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and found it really good. My mother has read all three and found the third one to be the best. |

It's worth noting, though, that the third book is very much a continuation of the second and you need to read the second before the third in order to really 'get it'. |
